I love the easy remedies and doses that are listed for every ailment, and I feel greater confidence in my own ability to heal and advise others. Smartly, the back of the encyclopedia contains a general index, as well as an index of herbs by ailment. This makes it easy to find what you're looking for, since the herbs are not shown in alphabetical order, but appearing in alphabetical order of their plant species. Excellent book!
Excellent book, wish I had seen this earlier and I would have saved a lot of money not buying other books. I would have given it 4.5 stars but that option is not available. What is missing from this book is in the materia medica when it talks about the preparations, it does not say which percentage of alcohol to use (40, 50 , 60 or 95%). I feel this is very important and should have been included. Also under certain herbs it does not list tinctures as a preparation. I did check other books and tinctures were suggested for that herb. But as I was told by my first herb teacher, herbalist usually don't agree on everything. Also missing under each herb (unless I am just not seeing it) is the energetics (cooling, warming, drying, etc.). The herbal remedies was a very small section in the book. Don't expect to use this book for that. That being said, these are the only things I felt was missing. The pictures were excellent, the details, herbal history fascinating, the list of herbs, phenomenal. The active constituents chapter is outstanding and makes it easy to understand. I have not seen this through of job in any of my other herb books. Buy this book, you will not regret it!

Very informative!
I haven't read the book....but I have skimmed through and it seems very informative. The plants and herbs are listed under their scientific name, which I didn't care for, but there are pictures with the common name under the scientific name. It also gives some recipes in the back on to make tinctures, capsules, tonic wines, etc. I would recommend this book to anyone who is wanting to learn how to make natural/herbal medicines.

***A MUST-HAVE FOR YOUR LIBRARY***
I bought this book a year ago. Never looked at it. Recently, I was thinking...boy, I wish I had a book on herbs. Wow!!! This book is awesome. Now, in the last week, I've purchased at least 50 herbs. After learning that I have chronic kidney disease, I'm look at some self-healing. Lots of good info in here for ANYONE. Even if you're healthy, there is an herb for you. Note: Get the spiral-bound book if you plan on using the book alot. I have the hard-cover version. While well-made, the pages will soon be coming out. I wish I had the spiral one now. UPDATE: I've purchased several other books, this book is the best for describing the herbs, uses, and when not to use the herbs. There are some recipes; however, as long as you know what ailment you are addressing, you can easily make your own recipe.

Useful reference for herbal medicine
After recently completing Master Herbalist Diploma, I have found this book very helpful. It has beautiful illustrations, concise descriptions and uses for each herb. It also covers the best ways to administer herbs and any contraindications, and gives instructions and photos on how to make them correctly. I have used it as a reference every time I work on my herbs for consumption, and herbal skin and bath products.
