Best product I've found to eradicate fire ants. Just a couple of tablespoons sprinkled AROUND the mound is all it takes. The workers take it to the pantry to feed the colony. After a week or so the mound is empty and can be leveled. Extinguish PLUS sterilizes the queen so she can't lay new eggs as it kills the workers. The granules can also be broadcast in large areas with a spreader. Pricey but affective.

We get a LOT of fire ant mounds here in South Carolina. I discovered this product years ago and since have used it every year to keep an area of about 10 acres mostly fire ant-free. Someone once gave me a tip on how to check if ants are actively foraging, which is required for this product to work, by putting a couple potato chip on the ground and checking later to see if there are any ants on them. If yes, then go ahead and spread this bait as long as it's not supposed to rain in the next 24 to 48 hours. Once spread, I find that the bait will kill off most mounds within about 4 days, and within 7 days it will be hard to find a mound that is still active. The problem with fire ants, of course, is they send out flying queens regularly from mounds on other people's property, so they will ultimately repopulate an area. I see all these queens floating in my pool skimmer all the time. That means I usually have to spread this bait about 3 times a year during the warmer months.

All I can say is, I haven't seen a single ant mound since we applied it. Used this one #25 bag on 10 acres about 2 months ago. We started to notice a lot fewer mounds in about a week. Two weeks after we applied it, no mounds and it's stayed that way. We're 100% sold on this stuff and will continue to use it about every 4-6 months. It's expensive but worth every dime.

I have a 33 acre property located in central Georgia dedicated to training gun dogs, Labrador Retrievers. When we purchased the property six years ago it was inundated with fire ant mounds. To train these dogs we us remote controlled dummy launchers at distances as far as 250+ yards. Initially it was impossible to train. The risk of a dummy landing on a mound and the dog getting a mouthful of fire ants was too high. Out of desperation my wife and I loaded up on Ortho Orthene and walke our main pasture, 23 acres end-to-end. We lost count after dusting over 800 mounds. It sort of worked. It would kill a mound but because fire ant mounds have multiple queens a new mound would sometimes pop up a few feet away. I was able to open up training areas but the fire ants kept coming back. Last year I was turned on to Extinguish plus. At a little over $10 per pound it could be expensive but they recommend only one to one and a half pounds per acre. Here's where it gets tricky. Most spreaders can't be set at that low a setting! At three to four pounds per acre Extinguish would be too expensive. My solution was to mix the Extinguish with pelletized lime. It costs a little over ten cents per pound in bulk. It is an ideal medium for carrying the Extinguish. I premixed a few 5 gallon buckets, loaded them on my Ranger with the spreader mounted on the back. I treated the 23 acre field with the 25 pound bag last fall while it was still hot enough that the ants were active. It is now early spring. It's obvious where I missed treatment, there are a couple of small groups of fresh mounds. Happily, most of the pasture is mound free for the first time in six years! I will be repeating this process twice a year, spring and fall from now on.

This ant killer is a little pricey, but it really does the job. We have around 5 acres that we treat we hook a spreader to our four wheeler and pull it around and treat the whole entire yard… well worth the money.

IMHO, this is THE most effective fire ant bait/killer on the market. It is recommended by the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service and they even offer a loaner spreader that is calibrated for its dispersal. You will see a difference in your fire ant population after on one application, but if you use it as recommended for superior maintenance, which is twice a year and applied when ground temperatures are between 60 and 90 degrees, those ugly mounds of red dirt teeming with vicious stinging ants will all but disappear. It may seem pricey at first glance but a 25lb. bag covers a LOT of ground. ACRES! Don't waste you time and money on products for treating mounds until you have treated your whole lawn/field/pasture and have your problems under control. Not suitable for strowing by hand or using mechanical spreaders that can't be adjusted for light distribution.
