We don't use butter at all. We pop it with a layer of canola oil sprinkle salt in and pop the corn. Everyone loves it but my Mom who has to slather it with butter. Even at the movies, she wanted us to ask for half a bucket of popcorn, pump butter and then ask them to fill it up and pump it again. She's 81 yo.

Question 2

Does the warranty including the gears, as they are moving parts, and is it a replacement warranty?

We just called warranty services (877-888-7077) and explained that our gears had gone out.  They are sending a set of FREE replacement gears together with an allen wrench and instructions for replacing the gears.  We asked for Priority Mail shipping (as we need it soon); they agreed and are charging ~$5 for this expedited shipping....which is very reasonable and accommodating.  Expected delivery: 2-3 days.

Can I roast coffee in this?

Yes, this is absolutely one of the BEST low cost coffee bean roasters anywhere. Just don't use much more than 3/4 cup of green coffee beans at a time, roast on LOW heat, and stir regularly until the second "crack" (pop) of the beans-- about 6 to 9 minutes for gas/electric respectively (because electric on medium low keeps going on and off). Some folks use nut roasters for this, but they are open and the chaff gets everywhere. With this unit, you just take the hot roasted beans outside and rinse the chaff off, NO mess. Why spend $400 on a coffee roaster when this makes better roasts and is more hands on fun! PLUS it works in power outages too!!!! Get good fresh green Arabica beans, roast in this, grind medium fine, then brew in your Bialetti stovetop unit for perfect espresso!

Is there a way to make fair-type kettle corn with this popper?

I did follow their recipe from their website the first time I made it, and the kettle corn came out dry and not sweet at all. I have adjusted to make it very much like what you get out of the giant copper kettles at street fairs.my recipe - prep all items prior to starting:1) Add 1/4 c (4 TBS) veg oil to whirly pop + 3 kernels - heat on high until you hear the kernels pop.2) Add 1/2 c of popcorn kernels + 1/2 cup sugar and 1-2 tsp salt (pre-mix the sugar and salt).3) Start turning the agitator - it will take about 2 min for it to get hot enough for the popping to start - and do not stop until it is done. You will know it is done when you hear a significant reduction in popping and/or it becomes very difficult to turn the agitator.4) remove from heat immediately.5) pour out onto a cookie sheet with a cooling rack on top of it, and then transfer to a big bowl, breaking up chunks and being sure to remove kernels. It takes me two rounds of this to transfer all popcorn over.6) ENJOY!7) clean up - hot soapy water and a scrub brush - there will be sugar crusted on all surfaces, but a soak and scrub cleans it right up.NOTE: I use mushroom kernels as they create a huge fluff to be coated when popped.
