what do the binocular specs mean 10x42 or 10-30x50?

These are 12 power, 50 mm objective lenses; they have about the same brightness as 10 power, 42 mm glass, but of course a higher magnification ratio. 10-30 are zoom lenses with -- depending on the zoom setting -- between 10 and 30 power. It sounds like one should always choose a zoom lens for the flexibility, right? Almost no experienced binoc users do for three reasons: weight/complexity, cost, and -- particularly -- much poorer optics. It is extremely difficult to design a flat, edge-to-edge, high resolution optical field with fixed power . . . and almost impossible for zooms no matter how much you are willing to pay. 12 power are about the maximum we are willing to handhold binocs due to "shake"; we use these as "deck binocs" but take ten or 8 power in the field.
