Product Description Magic Potion, the Black Keys' fourth album, is a spectacularly stripped-down set of sneakily melodic blues-besotted rock concocted in the Akron, Ohio basement studio of drummer Patrick Carney. Guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach is possessed of a compelling, hurt-beyond-his-years voice and an approach to lead guitar that is both wildly expressive and utterly succinct. The self-taught Carney, who anchors these tracks, may force writers to return "heavy" to the rock-critic lexicon as a seriously praiseworthy term. The Black Keys maintain a punk terseness to their adamantly do-it-yourself sound; they're as single-minded in their idiosyncratic evocation of the electric Mississippi blues as artists like the late Junior Kimbrough and R. L. Burnside as the Ramones were about early sixties rock and roll. However, there is nothing high-concept or ironically distanced about their style; it's all sweat, sincerity and as much swagger as Carney's basement allows. desertcart.com All hail the riff king! The Black Keys' guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach has the meanest way with a hook since Jimmy Page. He adds to his arsenal on the band's fourth full-length release, on which each track pounds its way into your skull with fuzzy, swampy fury. Less is very definitely more in Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney's world as the stripped-down guitar/drums attack smolders, burns, and then ignites without shifting into heavy-metal overdrive. But even with the occasional ballad such as "You're the One" slowing the momentum, this is an intoxicating blast of raw, thudding blues power. The duo impressively control the dynamics, raising and lowering the tension in a yin-yang struggle of ominous, greasy, heavy blues-rock that never sounds forced. With the exception of a few subtle but effective overdubs, this is the sound Auerbach and Carney heard in the drummer's basement studio where the music was recorded. Like the best rock and roll, the disc exudes a dark, cramped claustrophobia and foreboding sense of danger, just like wandering through a haunted house, unaware of what is behind the next corner. It's the main ingredient in the band's deceptively simple yet potent formula that creates this addictive, compelling, and often intense album. --Hal Horowitz Review: Bluesy, Gritty, Raw & Fantastic - For me, this is the last of the great Keys albums. I much prefer their early garage blues band sound to their later, slicker sound. And this album is fantastic. Being a big fan of Junior Kimbrough's music, the Chulahoma EP is still my favorite Black Keys CD, but this one is right up there with their best. Review: Fan of gritty blues? You will love this!! - Lots of others have already done detailed reveiws. I'll just add that I love this album. Have listened to it all the way through many times and can't get enough. If your a fan of gritty, late-night, MIssissippi hole-in-the-wall blues you should buy this album. I got it on special for $5.00 and I can't imagine a better use of 5 bucks. Just buy it!

Seven stars
Special circumstances should allow at least seven stars...these guys (and this album) are that good! This is my second purchase of this album, as it's hard to wrestle it away from my Ladyfriend...Black Keys: very bluesy, very raw, very, very, very good! Ask no questions, just buy this album!

Not as impressive as Rubber Factory, but a damn good one anyway.
To tell you the truth, I was a bit dissapointed when I heard the new songs on Myspace. I thought they were ok, but nothing compared to their older work. I was gladly proven wrong when I got the album. Granted, it's no Rubber Factory, but these guys are still rocking on their 4th release and first for Nonesuch Records, Magic Potion. This album does feel like a collection of outtakes from Rubber Factory. The same feel and production is there, like they recorded in an abandoned warehouse. The first song, Just Got to Be, is a great album opener (I heard them play it live in Cincinatti a few months ago), and other tracks such as Your Touch, Give Your Heart Away, and Modern Times are all as consistent as the best work off of Thickfreakness and The Big Come Up. I guess it's the slightly experimental songs on the album that I don't care for. You're The One sounds too much like a lazy Kinks song, and Strange Desire almost has a weird-Pixies thing going on. All complaints aside, though, Magic Potion is a fine record that will still establish their growing fan base, or possibly recruit some new ones as well. If you enjoy Junior Kimbrough, Led Zeppelin, or just rock in general, get this album.

The real thing!
I am 32 with somewhat young parents. So I grew up with my parents blaring Journey, Led Zepplin, Steve Miller Band, and Cat Stevens. I know what good rock is and these guys are IT. Hearing all the greats growing up, I recognize many of their styles in the Black Keys music and none of it comes off as a cheap copy-cat sound like so many bands tend to. These two guys have talent of their own and they play music that just plain sounds good. It's the kind of music you want to hear when you go out drinking beer with the guys or when you're driving in your car, or when you want to go out and hear a damn good live show. I can't seem to take this CD out of rotation - it's really damn good!

Keys, please!
The Black Keys soulfully lament their hard knocks and play mean guitar licks that are catchy and laid back enough to cozy up to until the songs touch on some disturbing darkness. Each of their albums explores different aspects of the blues-rock genre and they'll all get you throbbing. The album Magic Potion has a direction I tend to head towards. On this one I hear a distinct nod to Black Sabbath's self-titled album. The Black Keys album Rubber Factory has hooks a plenty and its share of naughty thoughts. Although the album Attack and Release smacks of older Iron & Wine and some tracks have a trip-hop influence to them à la Portishead and Cut Chemist, The Black Keys thump right on through the flourishes. Looking forward to seeing them live.

Very good, raw and powerful.
Really like this one a lot, a little more raw than their later stuff but that's what I like about it. The best 2 piece band since the White Stripes even though Jack and Dan Auerbach don't get along very well. Jack apparently thinks Dan is stealing his music, not sure if it's true or not.
