Screw down type is OK, Gravity type is much better.
Okay phin filter. My issue with it is that the screw down insert does not screw down all the way inside. The shaft inside is fully threaded but the insert is threaded to go only about 1/3 the way down. So there is a lot of space between the insert and the bottom when you turn as far as it will go. The result is that I need to use about 2.5 - 3 tablespoons of coffee grounds to fill that space and enough compression of the grounds to achieve the recommended drip time of 4 minutes. Don't know if this is by design but i'm running through a can of coffee much quicker than I had anticipated. Also, I wish there was a more textured nob when screwing the insert, its hard to grip sometimes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Edited 5/20/18 Seller reached out to me because of my initial 3 star review of the 8oz screw down type filter. Seller offered to send me the 8oz gravity type filter as a replacement. I accepted the offer and received the gravity type filter a few days later. Key differences between the screw down type and the gravity type: -Screw down filter comes in 3 parts (brew chamber, screw down insert, and cap) -Gravity filter comes in 4 parts (filter plate, brew chamber, gravity insert, and cap). -It's much easier to compress the coffee grounds with the gravity type. With the screw down, you're at the mercy of how far the screw down insert goes. -Cleaner brew with the gravity type as the coffee is passing through 2 layers (the brew chamber and the filter plate) versus the screw down type which only has 1 layer and consequently, some grounds finds its way through. -Gravity type is easier to clean after brewing as you just pull out the insert and dump the grounds. Screw down type was tricky to unscrew after brewing cause of the coffee oils. -Screw down type feels higher quality since it is all metal where as the gravity type has plastic nobs on either side for handling compared to the metal handle that the screw down type has. I'm fortunate enough to live close by to an Asian market that stocks both Trung Nguyen and Cafe Du Monde coffees and have tried both. Both coffees work well in the gravity type filter. Just make sure to compress the coffee grounds a little before brewing. I haven't use the screw down type since receiving the gravity type. 5 star rating to the seller for standing behind the product and making things right.

You will love this coffee filter (and the company that sells it!
If you've never had vietnamese coffee - hot or iced - you are missing a real treat. Thanks to Amazon, I was able to buy real vietnamese ground coffee and sweetened condensed milk (yes, they're distinctly different from their American counterparts). What makes the coffee such a treat is the special filter, called a phin. I bought this one from The Fitzy Shop. It's high quality stainless steel that's sturdy and very well made. The filter holes are small so the grounds don't end up in your drink. As a complement to this filter of excellent quality is the customer service. I received 3 emails - 1 before I received the filter with detailed brewing instructions, 1 after I received it to ask if I had any questions, and the last one a few days later to confirm that I was enjoying my purchase - this is unheard of! This is an easy filter to use and it produces an excellent cup of coffee. No paper filter needed either! This makes better coffee than my drip or french press. I highly recommend both the filter and the Fitzy Shop! (And I received no compensation or discount for this review!)

Perfect for brewing one cup iced coffee
Specialty coffee gadget for brewing Vietnamese iced coffee, and/or conveniently placing on top of cup for hot coffee. Brews coffee similarly to a french press combined with pour over. Method is to pour hot water through tightly packed coffee grounds. Advantages over a french press are that you can make smaller amounts, brew directly over ice and condensed milk, and the stainless steel is more durable than a glass french press. Disadvantages are volume, and the handle can get a little hot, but those are minor. Can be used with any ground coffee, so it's not necessary to buy specialty coffee unless you want to experiment with the unique flavor of Vietnamese coffees. This brand is well-made.

Perfect Vietnamese Coffee Every Time!
I am so impressed with this Vietnamese coffee filter set! I ordered the 2-pack in the 8 oz. size, and it's the perfect balance! Not too small, not too large - just right for a strong, smooth cup of coffee. The quality is excellent. The metal feels sturdy and well-made, and the filters sit securely on the cup without any wobbling. It's easy to use, easy to clean, and consistently delivers that rich, bold coffee flavor I love. Having two filters is a huge bonus - perfect for a slow Sunday morning coffee chat with my partner. Whether you're new to Vietnamese coffee or already a fan, this set is a fantastic value and works beautifully. Highly recommend!

Manufacturer Defect, but 1st Class Customer Service
I wrote the review below after receiving a faulty Vietnamese coffee filter. Within a day of my review being published, I was informed by Amazon that my purchase price had been refunded. Sure enough, AMEX acknowledged the refund shortly thereafter. A day after that, I received a package from the seller. I laughed when I opened it. Inside was not one, not two, but three new Vietnamese coffee filters, all in perfect working condition. This all happened with no response whatsoever from the seller - no apology, no excuses, nothing. All I got was swift, positive ACTION. This is probably the classiest customer service response I've ever received because, as we all know, actions speak louder than words. The seller did the right thing in the right amount of time - no explanation necessary. Thank you very much! FYI, I was able to fix the threads on my original Vietnamese coffee filter so that I now own four, excellent coffee filters. My Christmas shopping is done already, and it's only January. LOL _________________________________ I've owned a few Vietnamese coffee filters. This one would be the best except for one fatal flaw. The "spreader" (The part that screws down and compresses the coffee.) is not fully threaded. Running a toothpick inside the threaded part of the spreader reveals that it's only threaded half-way. As a result, the spreader cannot be screwed down far enough to compress the coffee as per the included instructions. The gap between the bottom of the filter and spreader, when screwed down as far as it will go, is about 3/4" and 3 rounded tablespoons of coffee (the maximum amount called for in the instructions) only fills that space about half-way. As a result, hot water runs through the filter too quickly resulting in weak coffee. This happens even when using the recommended Trung Nguyen coffee. Otherwise, I'm very pleased with the construction of this filter. Others I've owned have quickly broken, had holes that were too big, had ill-fitting lids, or allowed too much coffee grounds to leak around and on top of the spreader during brewing. This one seems pretty good except for the threading problem. I may even go to Home Depot and get a screw tap to fix this thing rather than return it or get the "gravity" model. Still, it's hard to give more than 1 star to a product that's faulty out of the box.

Pretty good value, but with two important flaws
Of the inexpensive filters in the wild, this one has pretty good build quality overall. It's nice, heavy stainless steel and pretty sturdy. It makes a good cup of coffee. Packaging was just a small zip-lock baggy in a padded envelope; this could be fine or it could be a problem if your delivery company is careless and drops something heavy on the bag. There are just two things that could take this from being a 'good' filter to being a 'great' filter and why I'm only giving it two stars instead of 5: First, the thumbscrew. It's too short, it's perfectly smooth, and it lacks a slot in the top. This makes it awkward to reach way down in the 6oz filter to turn the screw down, and because it's smooth, lacking any ridges or other rough surface features, there's almost no grip to be hand between your thumb and finger to turn it. The lack of a slot on the top means that if you get it clamped down too tightly, you can't stick the end of a fork or a screwdriver in there to back it off again. Secondly, the base of the filter doesn't fit neatly inside the lid. When you take the filter off your glass and want to sit it aside, it's ideal to be able to turn the lid upside-down and sit the filter in the lid to catch any last drips. It's not the end of the world that this one doesn't fit exactly, but it's little details like this which keep this from being a great filter, rather than just a good one. Still, it will make a good cup of coffee, and even comes with a printed set of instructions in case you don't know how to use it. It will do the job of being my "office" filter adequately.

All you need is condensed milk!
After enjoying Vietnamese coffee many times at our local pho joint, we had to know if we could make it on our own. Finding this phin was a great way to start! It came recommended by a friend and is not the most similar to what they use at the restaurant, but also made in Vietnam - makes it super legit! Very easy to use, to clean, to set up and makes coffee that tastes EXACTLY like what we'd be given at the restaurant so many times before. I'd suggest using a stronger coffee blend if you want it to taste like actual Vietnamese coffee, but if you're a fan of pour-overs, this is a great thing to have in your coffee arsenal!

Almost Perfect
For the price, it's a great little phin. To me, the screw-down press is a must, which some of the cheaper ones lack. The holes are also sized well and the coffee grounds generally don't fall through. My one gripe is that I wish the knob you hold for the screw was knurled. While I can get enough grip with it being smooth, it does get a lot more difficult to screw/unscrew when wet. This is particularly annoyinn when I want to disassemble it to clean after making coffee, as it gets very wet and slippery. I have to either manually dry it off to unscrew it, or wait for it to dry, which makes the cleaning process a bit more of a nuisance (can't just rinse it when stuff is caked on).

innovative & interesting
Nice design which is a modification of a South Indian filter coffee contraption. Pricing is bit more but the steel quality is good.Works with regular milk too but using condensed milk gives it an unique taste. A great change from our regular coffee taste. The screw mechanism helps you in adjusting the strength of the decoction. The grind should be fine and not extra fine.

Angenehm aromatischer Kaffe
Mit diesen Filtern schmeckt der Kaffee wunderbar. Man sollte nur den vietnamesischen gemahlenen Kaffee nutzen. Er hat die richtige Körnung. Mit der süßen Kaffeesahne ein wahrer Genuss.
