Does the timer work in training mode? I'm not interested in RIF control; I just need a cat door that operates on a timer.

Kay, I don't think the door will lock in training mode. But I, like you, just wanted a timed cat-door. For me it was to let the cats go out once the sun was up and lock them in once it got dark. I do not have any issues with animals (raccoons, opossum, chupacabra) trying to get in and because I have three cats and the chips were kinda big I simply taped a chip to the inside of the kitty door. This way when it is set to open there is always a chip close enough to activate it and the cat just has to push on it. Any cat can get in or out during the day and when it is set to close no one can leave (actually I only "close" it so the cats can't get out after dark, but after dark they can get in). Is the latching mechanism loud? how long does it take to read the chip and unlatch? rfid collor model is loud and slow.

Noise is moderate. Latching mechanism timing depends primarily on the microchip placement in the animal. If the chip is close to the neck area, it works well. If the chip is more towards the shoulders, the animal has to nose at the door for a period for the latch to trigger correctly. Hope this helps...

If I set the timer to lock at night and not let the cats out, if the cats are already outside after that time, are they locked out from coming in?

No, They still can come inside but cannot go back out again until the time you set them to go out.
