Would this be the best primer to use on melamine paneling that is found in bathrooms from the 1950’s?

I was disappointed in this product. I was using it on wood trim that had been painted with many coats of paint & different types of paint in a 1960's home. I didn't like the coverage & it didn't stop the peeling. I can't remember if the instructions said it is appropriate for melamine/plastic. I have painted regular paneling after a light sanding/deglossing and an oil based primer under the top coat. Make sure the product you use is made for your job in a damp environment.

Can this be used to prevent paint from peeling?

Yes. That is what I used it for. We moved into a place that had peeling paint. I removed what paint was peeling and put this over all the paint so no more would peel. I've had no peeling at all for the 8 months I've had it on.

Is this a good primer for bathroom where it will be damp?

I used it on my exterior door frames and garage. This stuff is a super basecoat and I suppose it would be good in a bathroom once you paint over it with a good gloss or semi-gloss paint. I love this product and have painted houses for years and will never do it again without it.
