The Going To Bed Book

This is my favorite bedtime book for toddlers. I buy it for shower gifts. I buy it for my grandchildren. I read it to my own so many times. Sandra Boynton makes reading to kids fun as it should be. Do not be deceived. This is not just fun. Her rhyming skills are excellent. Her books are your children's introduction to poetry. Please read to your kids. Nothing is more helpful for them learning to read. And read to them because it creates good memories. :)

One of my favorite books to give toddlers. Sturdy, fun to read and toddlers enjoy listening. Simple rhymes and the right length to keep their attention.

This was a LOVED favorite for my children and I bought this new one for my first grandchild. Sandra Boynton is so clever, and this book is a perfect before-bed read, with a rhythm that guides you in your reading to lulling you and baby by the end! The illustrations are wonderful, so fun, and the story is one you won't get tired of. In fact I had the whole thing memorized for years with younger children. Definitely one of my favorite Sandra Boynton books, although she does have many great ones!

First of all, this is a spoiler alert. I will be reviewing the book in detail. If you don’t want the ending to be ruined, STOP READING NOW! I give this book 5 stars only because it is an entertaining book, with cute illustrations, positive messages and a rhyming text that is easy to read. What I mean by easy to read is that it remains enjoyable for both the toddler and adult after several readings. As part of a going to bed ritual, it is just the right length to read every night. Now down to the nitty-gritty: One reviewer mentioned it disturbed her that all of the characters bathed together. True! But even worse is the fact that they are all animals and they are bathing together ACROSS SPECIES. There are elephants and bunnies all in the tub together. Isn’t that a gateway activity to bestiality? And they are on a boat that resembles an ark. Isn’t that implying that God condones bestiality? Then, the animals are putting on their pajamas and the pig has no pants on. Really? Pantless pigs? And to add insult to injury, the rhino is buttoning his own pjs. Even the illustration shows how impossible that would be ~ if rhinos wore pjs. Others have mentioned it is ridiculous to have the characters exercising after bathing ~ that no one should exercise after bathing. I agree. But they failed to mention that on the exercising page, a moose is holding a barbell above his head. Can you imagine what would happen if a toddler got hold of a barbell and held it over his head? Children learn by example, people. I feel obliged to explain every time I read the book that it is not acceptable for a toddler to hold a barbell over his head. I’m not sure he even understands what I mean by that. Lastly, to those who complained that the book was too small, and to those who complained that the book was too short: Absolutely!! I prefer my board books to be at least 9” x 12” and 25 to 30 pages. Toddlers find these much easier to handle.

This book has been read every night to our kid since about month 1 (now 1.5y). Great routine book for bed time, with one page in particular that came as a surprise and gave us a good laugh. Cannot recommend this enough.

Perfect little book to wind down for bedtime routine. It’s small enough that I can hold onto baby while reading this. It’s a board book so it seems pretty durable and that it will hold up well. The images are very clear and colorful

Classic children’s book! I have given this book at several baby showers. So much fun to read with your kids. All of the Boyton books are great. Sturdy, colorful pictures.

Excellent book. Fun and perfect for their night routine. I recommend all of Sandra Boyton's books.

Los dibujos son muy divertidos y cuenta todas las rutinas que hay que hacer antes de irse a la cama (yo quitaría la de hacer gimnasia que no es de las que tenemos en casa porque activaría a los niños y habría que cambiar el título a the NOT going to bed book). De cartón y dirigido a los más pequeños, unas rimas facilitas y simpáticas, muy musicales.
