can the area with the photo of the xacto be removed to hold a replacment blade refill case? it looks like the correct size.

If you are referring to the upper right area, it's a pouch that, when opened, has a booklet about the blades and handles. It should hold the refill case, though I not have one to test with.

What's your vote on the better case? The zippered case or the wooden case?

I just received the new X-Acto kit, and the zippered case is great. Everything snaps in and stays put, you can drop it, throw it in a backpack or whatever, without a worry. I prefer it over the wooden case kit I had when I was a kid, so I can only assume that it's better than the faux-wood/plastic wood case option that is also available today. I recommend the zippered case.

How well does the case hold the blades?

This case works very well. I had one of the original wooden cases many years ago and found it to be much less useful than this portable case. The holders and blades are quite secure.

Is this set difficult for left-handed people to use?

The knives and blades in this set are universal, so they will be no more difficult to use for left-handed people as opposed to right-handed people.
