Works great for IT passthrough mode.
I needed a true HBA for IT mode so I could do some firmware on drives. All my servers have H7xx raid controllers that don't support true IT mode. This was plug-friendly with the existing back plane. Actually, I have split the back plane in two on one of my lab servers, so I now have RAID for 1/2 and IT mode for the other. Also used for reformatting 520-byte sector drives to 512-byte sectors for older servers.
