How long must it bake?  I need an activity for a kids' birthday party.  Can it be baked and completed by the end of the party?

Accepted Answer

Bake at 275 for about 15-20 minutes.  It is a good craft idea for children (with adult supervision because of the baking part) roll, shape, bake, cool, paint.  I hope this helps.  have fun!

Can it be dyed? Or painted before baking?

Unbaked clay can absolutely be tinted, and by a wide variety of products, all of which will bake permanently into the clay, becoming part of it. Alcohol inks made by Adirondack or Jacquard (or felt tip art pens based in alcohol ink), oil paint, pigment powders, acrylic paints... There's a website called The Blue Bottle Tree, which has a wealth of information on all things related to polymer clay.

Question 3

I want to make a statue for my garden.  After it is baked, is it waterproof or do I need a special varnish to waterproof it?

Its water resistant but if you're going to keep something outside you should waterproof it. Polyurethane might work but talk to someone at Home Depot or Loewws or other hardware store who could help you select the best product for your needs.

If you make a cup or mug is it safe to drink from?

While Sculpey says non-toxic on the box, it is not for eating or drinking from. Even after baking it is not hard like ceramic or porcelain and you should never drink from any clay material that cannot receive a fired glaze such as those used in stoneware and porcelain china as chemicals can be released with heat or extended exposure to moisture. There is also a caution on the box that it should not be used for food or drink.
