I can’t find a country of origin anywhere on the product or the documentation. It’s well made, though. Sturdy.

Why thermoprotherm. stopped working aft. abt 3 months? displayshows 0s. no diff. >changed battery. (ironic (funny?) just sent 12 for fam./friends))

Mine stopped reading about 18 months after purchase. I called Thermpro and the customer service rep sent me a new one. It arrived a few days later and has been working well for at least 6 months. Great thermometer, good value, and excellent product support.

Is it truly “instant” read? If not, how long do I have to hold it over the food to get an accurate reading?

It is very fast, but you don't hold if over, but rather inside the food for actual contact. Then, it's less than a second.

Major improvement over older, cheaper model

The power button ultimately failed on the old reader. This model automatically turns on when you unlatch the probe. The time-out feature and auto on when picked up is wonderful. No need to wipe the probe before latching it back in the slot. I find the Temps to read accurately, but the instructions on how to calibrate it over time is handy.
