Will the Atomos caddy fit into a standard docking station?

Docking station? No. But the SABRENT USB 3.0 to SSD / 2.5-Inch SATA I/II/III Hard Drive Adapter (EC-SSHD) has worked just fine.

I'm confused. what is the purpose of these? what's wrong with just using the bare ssd in the recorder and a standard drive dock for your computer?

Regular SATA SSD will fit Ninja recorder fine. However, you risk it falling out because you are "hanging" the SSD by SATA connection only. This caddy is design to hold the SSD without it falling out (has groove to fit Nija 5, for example). If you think this is too expensive (and have 3d printer), you can print your own caddy, that's smaller and fit's like Angelbird drive. Just look for Nija5 caddy in thingeverse.

Are these the metal or plastic ones?

PLASTIC. I do not know if ATOMOS even makes metal due to possible shorting of the drives control board.

Where can I buy just one of these caddy's, I don't need 5?

I believe here on Amazon but if you can’t find it there go to the ATOMOS website.
