Hi Teri - up to 31 characters including spaces and numbers. Keep in mind, the print limit is not based only on a set number of letters or characters, it is also based on font size (the larger the font, the less number of characters).

No, we have had our machine about a year and since customer support contacted us when we ordered the product inquiring on how we were planning on using it and how we wanted it set up, it was all set up the way we wanted it before we received it and just had to plug it in and it has been running smoothly since then. We have not had to call customer service once.
