Hello, interesting question. Since an Olympic weight plate measures 18" in width, the shoulder width stance of a 5' 10" and taller athlete would not likely make contact. Of course arm length would play a role in the equation as well. But even for shorter lifters one must remember with the unit extended from arms the plates would hang at about knee level at upright point of movement.
