We use language all day, every day โ probably without thinking much about it. But if you stop and consider it, language is not only extremely important, itโs fascinating, too! Use of language is one of the key things distinguishing humans from other animals, and nearly 7,000 languages are spoken around the world. Without it, weโd be hard pressed to communicate, express ourselves, or understand others. The Book of Languages begins with an introduction to why language is important, how it originated and how it changes. From there, the book profiles 21 of the worldโs languages. Each spread showcases a languageโs history, where itโs spoken, what it looks like and how to speak a few phrases and count to ten. Rounded out with sections on non-verbal and animal language, this book will stimulate readersโ curiosity about the world and spark appreciation for language learning. Such a lovely book
If your child is interested in different cultures and languages, this book is wonderful. We've been able to connect with Japanese friends, Italian friends and French friends by learning how to say key phrases. We love it.

7 year old is fascinated by this book
7 year old DD is fascinated by this book. At 7 years old she grasped that people all over the world speak different languages. I love that there are sections for spoken languages and also sections for sign language and Morse code. DD seems to focus in on one language for a few weeks before moving onto a new language. It also sparks an interest in each of the countries and how people live.

An education
This is a fascinating and really superb book, which my 8 year old daughter and 12 year old son have both found intriguing, as have the adults in the family. it presents language facts by country, in a visually appealing way, in bite-sized chunks. We are being educated daily, but our children, about the languages themselves, and language structure. Of course the nature of this book is not to provide really in-depth information about any given language, but it has really inspired our family to find out more. Would be an excellent and unusual gift for any bright child.
