I'm so confused. So if you buy a brand new next one meter and it doesn't come with any control solution, which type do you buy one or two?

You can buy either solution. If you will look at the back of the container that your test strips come in, it gives you the test range for both solutions. The level 1 solution was less expensive when I ordered mine, so I went with it. What’s important is that the number that comes up on the meter when you do your control test is in the indicated range. My last control test showed 42. My test strips show a range of 37 - 46 for the level 1 solution. That shows my meter falls in range.

Where is the test range printed on the countour level 1 test bottle? I see no range number

The test range is printed on the test strip bottle. No idea why it's not on the control solution bottle as well.
At any rate, Level 1 is 37-46 mg/dL and Level 2 is 111-139 mg/dL.

Why is a glucose solution so expensive?

I can't speak to the price of the solution but the Contour Next meters are most accurate glucometers on the market. They are accurate to 96%. I have tried just about every glucometer out there. I'll gladly pay a few bucks for control solution for accuracy. Also, the test strips allow additional blood to be added if insufficient amount to provide reading.

What's difference level 1 and level 2 control solution?

CONTOUR® Next Control Solutions (Level 1 and 2) for use with CONTOUR® Next meters. This aqueous glucose solution contains a known amount of glucose, and by simply adding a drop of the solution to a test strip delivers results to verify test strips and meters are working properly. LEVEL 1 checks the accuracy of the lower range of results while Level 2 checks the accuracy of the middle range of results.  Simply apply a drop of the CONTOUR® Next glucose control solution to a test strip and run a standard glucose test. Confirm that the test results are within the accepted range printed on the test strip vial.
