Schlage Electronic Keypad Deadbolt Lock, Camelot Trim, Aged Bronze

This Schlage electronic keypad deadbolt has a trusted design that has been around for a number of years. We had our old nickel one for about five years and it has been very reliable. That one moved from the front door to the garage side door and we now have a Smartkey lock with remote key fob on the front entry to the house. When it came to installing a lock for our studio door we went back to the Schlage because of its price and reliability. The new lock has had some minor improvements from the original we bought a few years ago. These revisions make installation easier with simple inexpensive additions to the original internal design. As I had mentioned, installation is easy. The lock comes with two bolt length options. The most significant change to our old lock was the wire that feeds from the front keypad to the rear panel. With the old lock you had a thin wire with a TINY cap that pressed onto a pin on a circuit board on the back. It was incredibly fiddly when you consider that the sprung fastened cap was only about 0.08 inches or 2mm in diameter. In this new lock, it was a simple plastic plug that you just press in and it snaps into place. Sounds trivial but it removed minutes of frustration. After the basic assembly as shown in the first video on the amazon page, you just plug in the included 9 volt battery and follow simple instructions in the manual to program your lock. One nice thing I really like about this lock is that the deadbolt uses a clutch to engage the handle. You use the keypad to engage the clutch that lets the deadbolt work. After a few seconds the clutch is automatically disengaged and the latch spins freely. This makes it fairly tamper proof. In some ways it’s safer than our remote lock because there is less chance of someone trying to hack the lock remotely with some kind of wifi connection. We had our previous one for about five years and still use it on a daily basis. So I can tell you this lock is dependable. If you change the battery once a year you will probably never have to worry about it going flat. So far, I have replaced the battery on the old one every 12 to 18 months regardless of capacity and have used the old one for various electronic devices. These locks can also be opened with a regular key. Two are provided. We keep ours safe in a location where we can retrieve one in an emergency. Originally we bought this lock after a key broke in our old fashioned one. We had to call out a locksmith who spent three hours trying to drill out the old lock. It made a lot of noise, caused us (and our neighbors) a lot of frustration and then (to add insult to injury) cost us almost $300. That’s the price of three of these locks. So we bought this lock and we are so glad we did. It makes life so much easier not having to carry keys around. The keypad is illuminated and easy to use in the dark. You never have to fumble looking for keys. It’s a great addition to our garage and studio because of the number of times you go to the garage on some chore only to find the keys are back at the house. With the studio which is on a wing of the house we used to leave it unlocked because the frustration of going back and forth for keys seemed like a lot of hassle. We really like these locks. You can have several codes. Each member of our family has their own pin. We gave our sister in law one so they could crash even if we aren’t home. And we can create one on a whim should we have contractors or pet sitters visiting when we are away. When they first came out they were about 50% more expensive but they’re affordable now and I can’t recommend them enough. The only problem you might have with this lock is if you pull to close it really helps to have a second handle to grip and hold the door shut while you turn the handle. The twist knob on the deadbolt is not the easiest to grip and pull strongly, especially while twisting at the same time. For the garage and studio door we bought a cheap dummy knob to hold onto for this reason. That does the trick quit nicely.

I was replacing an older keyless door hardware so I was aware of the function. The instructions weren't exactly helpful quite enough...drawings were small and parts not labeled. Finally, got it installed and worked! The only problem I had was the original strike was smaller, so I had to carve out the space a little more which took me longer. The key entry is a bit rough bunt intended for that to be a backup. Overall, a good install.

We’ve done a ton of updates to our new home and still adding this to our front door is something we comment on everyday. It is so easy to use and has made quick runs up the street or to the park so convenient. Not to mention, our daughter can hop out of the car and let herself inside, instead of standing at the door glaring at me while I amble up to the door with the keys. Let's be honest, this is one of the most used locks on Air BnBs for a reason - its simple, reliable, and affordable. Install : Before buying a new lock of any kind, measure your door and make sure it is a standard width. Finding out in advance that your door is extra thin/wide will make your purchase way easier and install frustration free. We have a standard sized door for this lock and were able to remove our existing lock and replace it with this within 15 mins - using tools that I already had at the house. Usage : Even though we were using the same cut out as before, this locks sits slightly differently which means we have to make sure to really pull the door closed before we’re able to set the deadbolt. So you might expect similar with your install. Also, setting new codes is incredibly easy. Hesitations : The only worry I had was several reviews that mentioned issues with the battery running out. We’ve had this installed for 4 months now and the battery hasn’t shown any indication of running out, but we have several other easy to access entryways to our house so I wouldn’t be locked out if the battery were to run out without me noticing. I don’t think I’d be comfortable relying on this lock if this was my only point of entry into the house since batteries have been issues with other reviews. Upgrades : When I bought this I just wanted a keyless option for locking/unlocking the door. Now that I’ve gotten accustomed to it though, I wish I’d spring from a handsfree option that would allow me to lock/unlock the door remotely. Not a negative thing about this product, but if you’re on the fence about how ‘smart’ you want things to be - I’d suggest ‘the smarter, the better’.

First, let me start buy saying you should buy this item from WarehouseDeals. Amazon WarehouseDeals almost never lets me down with their used items. I have bought kitchen faucets to 4k TVs from Amazon's used warehouse. The only thing that sucks about WarehouseDeals is that they do not offer One-Day shipping. I got this lock in Bright Chrome because it was the cheapest ($56). That is a steal compared to its asking price ($100). So for half the price I was very pleased with this lock. Even if I paid $100 I think I wouldn't regret it. Amazon Warehouse Deals Review: Condition of lock = 5/5 , Wouldn't have been able to tell if it was even used Packaging = 4/5 , Not perfect but everything was in the box, wouldn't say it has elegant packaging like Apple Products Price = 5/5 , Half the price ladies and gents! You must press the Schlage Button and then turn the lock. I'm glad it isn't automatic because the more mechanical parts to this thing means the more chance of malfunction. You can only imagine what would happen if this thing automatically dead bolted your door. If your door doesn't fit perfectly like mine (I have to pull my door in and then deadbolt it) then you imagine this thing trying to push the deadbolt into a solid wood frame. Security Options & Passcode = 3/5 , What I wanted more from this lock was to be able to set longer passcodes, (please correct me if I am wrong but you can only have a 4 digit code), I think 4 digits is too easy to guess and easy to see. The lock is also missing a security feature such as punching # or * before or after your passcode, something that makes it longer or harder than 4 digits. I also like locks like these that implement a trick feature where you can enter a apart of your passcode and then enter nonsense random digits into the system and then enter the rest of your passcode for it to unlock to confuse whoever is watching. Ease of Install = 5/5 , I definitely think this is an almost universal install. If you already have a deadbolt installed you don't have to do much at all. Just unscrew you plating from your old lock, remove the old deadbolt, slide this new one in and add the casing with the battery and everything properly plugged in, and be sure to make sure the cam lock is facing up. Overall = 4/5 , I did really want more passcode options but it is a great lock and for a great low price (again correct me if I am wrong about this I would be very much appreciative but I didn't see anything in the manual about more than 4 digits). Now I have no need for the second bottom lock so I removed my doorknob and replaced it with a matching Schlage passage knob. Deadbolt is the best and safest way to go. Would I recommend to a friend? Yes! it's the 21st century! Out with pointless key locks and in with pin codes and fingerprints. Advice or Suggestions before buying? Buy it, don't tell anyone your passcode, be sure to tell your landlord if you have one and maybe you won't have to give him a spare key (just tell him to call for the pin if he ever needs emergency access) and most of all, save some money and buy it from Warehouse Deals! It's a pretty solid lock for the price. I've installed quite a few and usually have been happy with them. Be aware that there are ones that fail. However, Schlage has made good on these. You get what you pay for.

I hate this lock. When punching in the code it takes like 5 times to get it right. When you touch the screen it does not take the 1st number or it will. But then flash that you put wrong code in. THEN there is the locking/Unlocking knob outside. Even when you press the lock button the mechanism inside does not always catch. So the knob will just free spin, never locking the door. And if you not quick when its does work, it will half lock the bolt over. My last one would allow you to put any amount of numbers in as long as you got the code right in sequence. This one will only take 4 digits and if you messed up on one it will reset. The exterior knob also has a lot of play in it. I wish I could send it back.

We bought two units to install in our house after having some renovation work done and leaving a key under the mat for long stretches of time. This was not an ideal situation, and we came home one night to find that the key had been used by someone to enter the house and unlock one of the windows, presumably to come back at night to burglarize the house. Installation into doors with existing, standard size holes was incredibly easy. All parts are labeled to ensure the correct orientation, and the directions are clear. After removing the old deadbolt, the new Schlage latch unit slides right in. The keypad unit then slides in and stays in place due to the bracket that fits in the hole. The rear plate is held on by two bolts that screw in easily through the latch mechanism and into the keypad unit. Finally, the rear cover goes over the rear plate with two small machine screws. The required nine volt battery was not included. Programming was easy, with two pre-programmed unlock codes that can be easily wiped away and replaced by your custom codes. Once programmed, the deadbolt locks and unlocks very easily. We love the convenience of not needing to dig out a key to get in. We can program an entry code in for a worker, then delete it when no longer needed. There is also a vacation mode that disables the codes, requiring use of the key to enter. You can also change the master programming code, which is helpful if you do not buy a 2-unit set (it was cheaper to buy two individual units than to buy the 2-pack). We just changed the master code on both to a number we could remember and re-keyed the cylinder, since we had to re-key all the other locks in the house. Aesthetically, it is a nice looking, solidly built unit. The rear housing is somewhat large, but it has to house the nine volt battery and some of the electronics and mechanisms. Overall, a good buy, even at 3x the price of a traditional Schlage deadbolt.

Wonderful purchase. Installation was easy (the most time-consuming part was having to chisel out extra space for the plate, and I wound up not being able to use the decorative plate to cover it, the previous homeowners having really jacked up the door jamb when installing the previous deadbolt). It took me 20 minutes for the normal installation stuff for which the manufacturer is responsible (an additional 40 minutes to deal with the usual quirks involved with improving a 160-year-old home), and I'm only a moderately handy woman (though I have installed a number of locks before, so this was nothing new for me). My only criticism is for the instructions: format/order on the page wasn't fantastic, and the pictures were okay but a little difficult to make out in a couple of the steps, but the real problem was the size of the pilot hole they told me to drill. Way too small for the screws for the security plate, and I should have known better than to believe it: my eyes told me it wouldn't work, not with the hard wood I was drilling into, and it caused me some difficulty and resulting screw strippage because of my own carelessness. But that was my fault for not using common sense. Now installed, the mechanism works incredibly well. Easy glide when the deadbolt turns, and I love that I have to turn the deadbolt manually instead of the battery operated mechanism having to do it; to me, the additional mechanization just means that things will wear out faster and the batteries will have to be replaced more quickly. I have frequent guests (operate a small bed/breakfast operation in my home for overflow guests at the local college) and I bought the lock to make entry easier for THEM. But I have been the real beneficiary because it makes every entry and exit so easy for me. Highly recommend. I wish I had done this years ago. I haven't tried this yet, but someone just suggested to me that I key the door for the last 4-digits of guests' phone numbers so that they can easily remember the code, and I can then delete as soon as they're gone. I think this is a brilliant idea.

this is my 2nd one, i have one on my back and front doors. it really is the best of both worlds (digital and analog) and is perfect also for Canadian winters! if you're looking for a fully digital 'smart lock' connected to your mobile and the internet, this is NOT for you. with this lock, you enter the number code of your choice, and it 'engages' the lock mechanism so that you can unlock it manually. IF that fails or the battery dies, you can still use a physical key. the main point is that the electronic mechanism doesnt unlock the door for you, it just disengages the locking mechanism so that you can manually, physically, unlock it yourself. so it doesnt jam up or freeze up in the winter or lose power and you dont need the internet or a working wifi signal for it to work. there is a 9V battery but since the electrical mechanism isnt actually unlocking the latch, its not likely to die for quite some time, and when it does, you can still use the physical key.

Works well, looks good. Be careful your existing hole may have to be bored out slightly bigger. The number pad unit has 2 small wedges at the end of it so when placed in hole and pushed against the door it does not sit 100% flat on door so it leaves a gap of about 1/8. What I did was I placed a black 1/8 thick rubber pad between the key pad unit and the door. I cut out the 2 1/8 hole on the pad, placed it on the key pad unit , traced the pad to the key pad unit, cut it to shape size and then installed it. I then pushed the key pad unit with rubber pad against the door giving it a perfect snug fit filling the gap without oversizing the existing hole. Then I placed the indoor unit with the two screws compressing the two units together with the pad for a very snug fit. Works great and looks great. If it fit perfect from the start I would of rated it a 5 star.
