I tried everything to save my floors like crates, potty pads, even fake turf and nothing worked as well as Fresh Patch. Some people may feel the cost is a bit steep, but I have a few tips that more than double the typical lifespan of each patch 👇 I order the Standard size (24x16”), and with my 8 lb chihuahua I can stretch one box to almost an entire month by running a small, inexpensive grow light over it for a few hours a day. It keeps the grass dry without killing it and helps control odor for weeks, far longer than the expected lifespan. The size is perfect for my little dog, and it even worked for my 60 lb German Shepherd when we were snowed in. It definitely wore out faster (totally expected for a big dog), but in a pinch it still worked. If you have multiple dogs, I recommend tucking something absorbent underneath the grass inside the box. It prevents the patch from sitting in pooled urine and noticeably extends the life. The box itself is extremely sturdy. I’ve never had issues with leaking or mess. Even when it starts to look worn, the liner stays sealed and durable. The only time I ever had a problem was due to a mishap I witnessed upon its arrival, causing slight damage in the box (seen in images) but it was absolutely no fault of the seller or product itself and they immediately sent a replacement. By the way, their customer service is AMAZING and they were very quick to respond. Overall, this has been the most reliable solution I’ve found for picky, stubborn, or hard-to-train dogs. It’s absolutely worth the price and if you can extend the lifespan, EVEN BETTER. Most dogs naturally prefer real grass, so mine needed zero training. They sniffed it and went right away. They wouldn’t use it at all, not even sniff it! 👇🏼 So I tried something new:👇🏼 I brought the patch to my house and let my dogs use it once or twice. When I brought it back to my mom’s house, BOOM!!! Her dogs’ “territory marking instincts” kicked in the moment they smelled another dog’s scent, and now they use it perfectly every time. I know not everyone has someone who can “pre-mark” the patch for them, but you can still try something similar. If you have a friend or family member, anyone who has a dog that doesn’t live with you and your dog: You can use a paper towel to dab spots where their dog normally goes potty, then gently wipe that scent onto the grass. It’s a simple trick. Then REWARD your dog so they know they are the GOODEST puppy dog EVER!!

Fresh Patch is useful and convenient in potty training our Miniature-Schnauzer puppy! We use it inside our home, in his fenced area, and placed on top of washable puppy pads. This product was recommended by the puppy's breeder, and we have been using it daily in our home for just over two weeks ago. With the arrival of our eight week old puppy, you can imagine the use this Fresh Patch Standard Size (15lbs or less) has had! Due to already having an older mature Miniature-Schnauzer in the home, our puppy has to be kept separated since we are awaiting the necessary vaccination period to be fully protected. This means no outside walks or bathroom breaks on our back lawn. As you know, per breeder's advice, the puppy is not allowed outside on the ground, nor mingling with his older sibling Miniature-Schnauzer. So...Fresh Patch it is! This product is highly convenient! The puppy is already familiar with using it, as the breeder had started potty training him with it weeks before his arrival! In the meantime, this product works has worked well and is durable! It arrived to our residence within four days. Fresh Patch is a compact patch of grass, in a waterproof box. This Fresh Patch with frequent daily use has lasted two weeks and three days. I wished I would have ordered another Fresh Patch sooner, as two weeks is pushing it with a young puppy and time has flown by! I can see how this might last a small mature dog longer since they are not peeing and pooing as frequently as a puppy! Be sure to pick up the solid waste quickly and gently from the grass to keep it in the best condition. Even with the many clean ups this Fresh Patch has had, it does not need to be watered. You can lightly mist it if need be. Remember dogs don't like walking on soaking wet grass to pee or poo! One thing in particular, keep an eye on your puppy as they will surely show interest in the patch, and begin to chew on the grass or pull on it. Even then, very durable. Be patient! With positive reinforcement, we encourage the puppy to stay off of it and distract him from it with toys or play time. If he is really persistent, then we remove it from his area for short periods of time. Puppies chew, so yes they will show interest in the box, but not for long if they are told no and given positive reinforcement! With that said, the box does holds up well. In case poo or pee comes in contact with the box, and it surely will. Glove up, grab a few paper towels, and wipe the sides down with puppy-safe cleaner or safe homemade cleaner periodically to freshen it up and keep it sanitary. I haven't had to do it too often, meaning lots throughout the day, as the puppy uses the Fresh Patch well. When the time comes, dispose of the Fresh Patch box in the trash. Also, you could compost the grass as well! Be sure to save money and use their Save 50% On Your Next Fresh Patch sticker when it arrives. One downside, Fresh Patch does not include a resuable tray for customers, as DoggieLawn does. Fresh Patch requires a separate purchase for the tray, but it should be included or as an option or at least with your first purchase! This will encourage repeat business and keep your customers happy! Overall, this product gets a thumbs up!

I purchased this because I was living in a small upper-floor apartment in the city with two small dogs (chihuahua and pomeranian). They are both tiny and aren't able to hold their bladders for a full 8+hr. workday, and taking them outside involved a long and tedious process of strapping both wiggling dogs into their respective harnesses, going down several flights of stairs, walking across the busy parking lot to a patch of grass, trying to get them to do their business while they're being distracted by people/other animals/cars/etc., hauling them back inside, taking off the leashes and harnesses, and THEN cleaning up the mess when they had accidents inside anyway :) Trying to do that multiple times per day, in all sorts of bad weather, while working full-time + overtime was just totally overwhelming! I searched for solutions and decided to purchase this product to put outside on my small balcony. It arrived promptly and was great for the first few days--my dogs enjoyed going outside on the deck and took to using the potty patch right away. HOWEVER. After just a few days of use (and some rain), it got very soggy. I had hoped it would be more economical than pee pads, but if it already needed to be replaced it wasn't worth the cost. I had been just picking their poop up off the patch and throwing it away, so the sogginess/general grossness was just from urine and rain. Really the issue here is that it's literally just a patch of grass held in a cardboard box. Nice concept but the cardboard turned out to be a problem. Disposing of it was a bit of a chore as well...I had to put on gloves, wrestle it into a garbage bag, and haul it to the dumpster. I think if I'd had it inside instead of outside, it would've lasted a bit longer before getting soggy, but I didn't want to keep it inside (I think it would smell, and I didn't want to risk getting urine on my floor). If you can protect it from the rain/elements and don't mind the cost of re-purchasing it regularly then it might work for you. Wasn't for me though. I wound up getting a large pee pad holder and just using that inside instead. It is cheaper and more sanitary for me.

This and other products I've purchased lately (see my reviews) have been a real lifesaver for me and a new puppy. I just moved to a 2nd floor condo and have a 12 week old Basset hound pup I'm trying to housetrain, but I live alone and cannot always be home. It was an absolute nightmare climbing up and down the stairs at 2 and 3AM to let the dog out, and it used to bark a lot all night, have accidents all day... it was exhausting. I needed a better system for sure, especially once I went back to work. What I ended up doing was installing a balcony pet door (Ideal Pet Products) and ordering these hydroponic grass products (Well, originally, I had him fenced in in the kitchen with a box, and he would still miss the box sometimes; now, he is very clear that the balcony is the place to go because there is a distinct boundary). It took him a while to fully "get it", and to this day, he still prefers to do his business out front on leash, but I do not worry about him when I go out or when I'm away at work anymore. I watch him on my iPhone (Cloud baby monitor app), and he is doing what he's supposed to be now. I have a setup where his bedding area is enclosed by a Regalo playyard fence/baby gate in an arc shape around the pet door, and he can have 24 hr access to his grass, too, whenever he needs to go. I have now tried both Fresh Patch and DoggieLawn, and can compare them side by side. In the photos, FreshPatch is the slightly smaller box in the front, and DoggieLawn is in the back (keep in mind, I stagger when I order them, so that FreshPatch is a week older). (EDIT: Not sure if Prime is available anymore on either, so taking this out of the review). The DoggieLawn wasn't bad on shipping either, considering it is a live product, but it is not for those who need something right away... took just over a week (earlier than its estimate). The quality of both appears to be comparable; the grass I got with DL appears to be a different variety (slightly coarser, still robust; the dog seems to have no preference aside from whatever is fresher), but both seem to last about the same amt of time (roughly 2 weeks, depending on use). I highly recommend that you spritz your pieces down with water at least once a day, to keep them live longer. The hydroponic mats they grow the grass on appear identical; both are clean and soil-free, similar to that Cocotek mat type of substrate. The main difference is that the DL is *slightly* larger, dimension-wise; they claim 33% (see description). For those who complain that the price is so much higher than lawn sod you can buy at a landscaping store or Home Depot, well, this is NOT sod. It is bug-free, soil-free, cleaner and (EDIT: Now that I've had the experience, the hydroponics do NOT last longer than garden sod, so long as the dirt is packed tightly and the sod is watered daily). I made a summary chart, attaching as a picture. EDIT: Now that I've had more experience with many options, I've updated the chart and will write more on my experiences. As stated above, I was incorrect to presume that garden sod lasted less time than hydroponic grasses (something I had heard from others). From my experience, if the sod is fresh and packed in tight soil and watered immediately (and daily afterwards), it can outlast the hydroponics. Obviously, the fresher the sod, the better, so a lawn & garden store might be best; for me, Home Depot is still the most convenient, and their sod is fresher than Lowes in our area (the dirt on the Lowes grass was ridiculously dry and loose, plus, the sod is more expensive by almost double). I have gotten this sod to last almost a month on my balcony, when watered frequently (but not drowned in a tray). That is good, because replacing a whole strip of lawn sod on the 2nd floor is a huge, dirty chore--I have to carry it from the car, up stairs, then through a carpeted living room to the balcony, and it is quite heavy. It's all worth it to have the dog use it for this long and not have to take him downstairs constantly to do his business, but it's still not something to look forward to. If you are not able to lift this stuff or don't want to deal with the dirtiness, I still highly recommend hydroponic grass--DL or FP. However, I have to take one star away because neither offer Prime, and with the convenience of fresh sod in the summer, I have to go with HD or Lowes (plus, the realization that hydroponics can't outlast sod; I think this is mostly due to the fact that sod soil retains moisture better and just is larger, so it spreads out the urine better). In the winter, I will likely go back to hydroponic delivery or artificial turf. The fake grass isn't a terrible option when it's cooler, because it doesn't stink as much as in the heat. In the summer, you just smell it too much, no matter how much you spray it down. What I do for artificial turf on the balcony is lay a tarp down underneath first, then layer rubber mulch on top in a slant for drainage, then spray Nature's Miracle Urine Destroyer liberally, then lay the fake grass with drainage holes over it. The dog still prefers fresh live grass, obviously, especially if the turf gets too old with urine smells. You really have to spray it down frequently to minimize this, so I have to go with live grass products in the summer. Tips on getting your dog to use grass: Reward and praise every time you see your dog go inside the box--I use his favorite salmon treats Don't move the box too much, it's confusing to puppies Take him/her to the box on leash right after a nap and give the verbal command you use outside for elimination; be patient if he doesn't go Spray with pheromone products; I've never tried it, but some say it works--I just catch some of his pee in a poop bag when he goes outside and use as a "reminder" when he hasn't used the box in a while *Gently* ease the poop off the grass once it's hardened somewhat, to avoid mashing it into the grass; makes it last clean longer After removing poop in the mornings, spray or mist it down with a spray bottle liberally; this also helps clean off the urine If your puppy frequently goes near the box but just outside it, limit his fenced in area more (had this problem when I started in the kitchen) For accidents outside box, use Nature's Miracle to clean up the scent so that he isn't tempted to start a habit

We are on our 2nd purchase now. I wanted to give it a thorough trial before leaving feedback. I have a 5 pound Chihuahua and a 6.5 pound Papillon who are getting older and having a harder time going longer periods of time waiting to go outside. After seeing all the reviews and trying other "fake grass" options (never worked), I was not totally convinced this would work for us. The dogs stay in a large crate when no one is home to let/take them out and the small size fits perfect in the crate still leaving room for their beds and blankets. There was a full month between deliveries and the grass does get dead and brown, but so does the late summer grass outside and didn't seem to affect my dogs using it. I did notice as it gets drier, it takes longer to absorb the odors and smells a little more when it's wet so I may switch over to 3 week deliveries to prevent that. I've read that female dogs have stronger urine so that may not be an issue for people with male dogs. My dogs would rather go outside when someone is home to let them out, but that may change as the weather gets colder. The Chihuahua really hates cold weather and the last two winters were really bad which was one of the main reasons for exploring other options. I was actually considering building a wooden box in the garage and growing grass in it for the winter months, but then I happened to see this product on Shark Tank. The deciding factor for me was seeing how, as the dogs are getting older, they were having a harder time when no one is home during the day and they were having problems waiting to go out. Rather than risking health problems and pricey vet bills and having to wash their bedding more due to accidents, I decided to try Fresh Patch and we have had no more problems. Since I like the product, in spite of the price, I signed up for the automatic order on the vendors website, which saves 5%. I also had a promo code which saved another 5%. I'm not sure yet if that promo code only worked on the initial order or if it will apply to future orders. You can easily change the number of weeks between deliveries (1-4 weeks), which I may need to do over the winter if they use it more to avoid having to bundle up to go outside. However, I can lengthen that time in the summer when they need it less. I saw some posts mentioning problems with bugs. I have not had any problem like that with either order and both orders showed up nice and green. I do agree with other posts that mention that Fed Ex doesn't pay attention to the box label or the red sticker indicating box should be "this side up" (the top of the box - basically, grass side up). Both times the box was left short side up so I had to straighten the grass patch, but it wasn't a huge deal. I also saw some posts where purchasers were concerned about leakage. I do have small dogs so that may help, but what I do is when I take the lid off I slide the bottom of the box into the lid and essentially have two layers underneath the grass, which may help. I have had absolutely no problems with leaks. I have also had no problems with the box or grass being chewed or dug apart, but my dogs don't tend to be diggers or chewers so that also is not a concern for me. Overall, I highly recommend the product. I have read they are trying to open a location on the East Coast and hopefully as they expand and increase their business, they will be able to lower their costs a little. Update: October 2016 We are still happy customers of fresh patch. They now offer different sizes in addition to this one, the "XL" which is advertised for dogs over 25 pounds, and the "mini" which we have tried. It is exactly half the size of their original one in a smaller cardboard tray. The XL does not come with a cardboard tray, but they do offer a custom tray for it on their website. I also wanted to mention that their customer service is fantastic! I realized my last order was placed when I looked at their website and saw they now offer different sizes. I contacted the company on their website requesting to switch to the mini to try that size. I mentioned in my message to them it may not be able to be taken care of since the current order on my monthly subscription had already been placed. Since the order had not yet been shipped, they refunded me the difference and switched my order from the original size to the mini. I have also had to contact the company on a couple other occasions and they are very quick in their response and, in my experience, have always been willing to keep me happy as a customer. I wish all companies were this easy to deal with :)

She learned to use this very fast. I have a mini dachshund puppy who was barely 3 lbs when I bought the standard size for our condo lanai (balcony). She did try to chew the cardboard box so I bought the plastic tray from their website. I also trimmed some of the grass down with scissors because the tall grass bothered this tiny short-legged puppy. But. She then tries to pull up and chew/eat the corners of the sod. I don't want her to get a blockage. A few blades of grass are fine but she is trying to eat the brown matting underneath. I have had two grass deliveries so far. Both went fine. But after one week, they stink. I pick up the poops immediately, and she only pees on it at night. During the day I take her outside. Once she decides it smells, she will go anywhere else on the balcony EXCEPT on the Fresh Patch, but she will still try to eat the corners. I went to Lowe's out of desperation, and their sod pieces are so cheap and fit the tray exactly. However, in FL they are some very spiky hard grass type called Floratam, and she pulls those up (thick roots and all) to eat them. She will get a blockage from the roots so that one has to go. The Fresh Patch grass is a very fine grass at least. I might try one more attempt but at $35 I cannot stomach doing that weekly. I could see doing it if I knew the night time potty would last only 2 more months.

I ordered 3 of these for a kitty birthday party. All 3 were high quality, beautiful fresh, lush, green grass. Absolutely the best I could have hoped for. I am very pleased and glad I chose this pet grass company over others. Delivery was fast, too. Edit: It is one week (7 days) since delivery. I am updating with a photo of what the grass looks like now. It dried, shriveled, and faded pretty quickly. I'd say by day 3 there was a noticable difference in color and texture. My cats didn't use it for a potty. Just lounged on it a few hours each day. We live very close to where it's grown. Shipping travel time was only a few hours for us, so I don't believe travel time affected the lifespan.. My cats did love it, and I will purchase again, but want to give people who are looking an idea of how long it'll last. Seems it would need to be replaced freqently if it was being used as a potty.

It is with a heavy heart I write the review for the Fresh Patch, as all my research showed it the overwhelming favorite among consumers for grass pads. However, experiences may vary, and mine has been mostly negative. I have purchased this product 3 times over the course of around 40 days, hoping things would turn around, but they have not. Let me break it down. Shipping: 2 star – My initial purchase had Prime shipping (when available). Though I did not initially understand what that meant, essentially my product was ordered; then 3 days later it shipped; then 2 days later it arrived. The grass was in the box only 2 days, and arrived looking healthy and green. When I went to purchase it a second time, Prime was no longer available. This time, I ordered it at night; it shipped the very next morning; but it did not arrive for 6 more days. That means it sat in the box for all those days, and you can guess what happened – the product arrived looking soggy and noticeable yellowed. However, after a couple days of sun and some miracle grow, about half of the yellowing faded back to green, and the grass looked healthy, but stressed. Product Health/Longevity: 1 stars – While the yellowing grass faded, the grass lasted the minimal time I had read from others. I have 2 small female dogs, though only one would use the product; essentially, I had just one dog peeing on the pad. She would use the pad on average, once a day, with a couple days of twice usage (she was taken on walks for all other potty breaks). After about 80% of the uses, the pad was sprayed down thoroughly (by us) with water to lessen the damage to the pad. Around the 7 day mark, the dog began to refuse to use it; in fact, placing her on the pad would cause her to quickly remove herself – it was clear she didn’t care for it any more. Between days 8 and 10, the pad would start to rapidly die from the middle. By around day 14, the majority of the center of the pad was dead. This same pattern was observed with each new pad purchase. Throughout, the pad was placed outside on a deck where it received an adequate shade/sun mix and temperatures between 50 – 70 degrees F. I can’t imagine how I could have taken better care of it. Ease of Use: 4 stars – The pad was easy to set up, and less messy than I’d thought. I simply removed the top of the box that arrived, and set the pad down. There is no dirt to mess with; the cardboard did not leak from dog urine and/or moderate grass watering; and when finished, the box integrity was still mostly intact (handle with two hands, as it will have lost some rigidity). One dog took to the box immediately after being shown were to go. The other dog refused to use it but once, even after extended coaching. It appeared anecdotally that the dog that would smell the grass would use it, but the dog that refused would not. Overall, this product was a disappointment, mostly do to shipping problems and health/longevity. Due to the above mentioned timelines, I would have to order this product once/week to make it viable, and the price with shipping ($29) is prohibitive at that rate ($1,508/year). Moreover, you’d have to order the product each time a new one arrived, which would be annoying to say the least. Some dogs will use these and some won’t, so I can’t really blame the product for that. I hope you have better luck than me.
