The San Diego-based duo's fourth release is really their poppiest and most accessible to date, as even the most cursory listen to the obvious single, the Heatmiser-ish "Nothing to Nowhere" will attest. Perhaps they can get their songs onto Gossip Girl or The Hills and be playing Madison Square Garden next week? A Pinback album is a beautiful thing -- smooth mellow catchy cerebral and fun with a hint of angst and self-doubt
I looked forward to this album for a long time and wasn't disappointed. Pinback's music is intellectual pop -- and some of the songs, especially the first two on the album -- "From Nothing to Nowhere" and "Barnes" take a few listens to wield their magic. Listening to their music is, to use a stretched analogy, more like listening to Bach than Mozart -- it is immediately impressive and obviously well-thought out but some of it, like Bach's music in my experience, takes becoming familiar before it engages at an emotional level. On the other hand, a song like "Good to Sea" is immediately both intellectually and emotionally exciting. As a whole the album is exciting and a new direction for Pinback, it feels less driven by an underlying feeling of muted anger and distilled urges and more by a desire to explore and feel -- if that makes sense at all, and here I am not even discussing it at the level of lyrics but just the experience of listening to the music. I think Abaddon will remain my favorite Pinback album but this is a brilliant and catchy continuation and evolution of a band that I hope continues to make music for a long time.

Vinyl edition not great
This is *not* a review of the album, performance, or song-writing. I am simply making comment on the audio quality of the LP.In this age of vinyl returning to favor, many recording artists offer LP, CD, and of course Mp3/Mp4, etc. of their music. For a large number of artists and record companies, the LP version is worth getting. One can hear deeper, richer timbres, and the improved quality of sound is worth the higher cost.Not so with the LP version of Autumn of the Seraphs. The tone is dull and unremarkable, the articulations of the instruments - even the drums - is mushy and without clear definition. Even the vocals suffer from muddiness.Unfortunately, it sounds as if the LP version was not given its own mixing & mastering treatment. I love this album, but I dislike the vinyl edition quite a bit.

Pleasant listening
Can music be calm and energetic at the same time? If so, Pinback achieves this. This is the kind of music I can listen to any time of the day -- nights, long drives, lazy mornings. If you like smashing pumpkins, silversun pickups, or secret machines, you should give this a try.

You can't go wrong with Pinback
Pinback is one of my all time favorite bands. I am not sure what it is about them but I listen to EDM 95% of the time, when I am not listening to Pinback! This is my favorite of their albums.

nothing to nowhere
mon, dis record gots loads o' de good melodies, mon--de first track, "from nothing to nowhere," be big big rushing indierock anthem witout being too-too anthemic, you know--like if one could stomach de foo fighters, mon.i be jamaican, mon, you must to know dat by de now! so o' course me like to dance to de "slow jams"--de GROOVE. well, der be grooves here.bot de one ting disturb me much-much: dees guys sometime go-go in de direction of de MATH ROCK. me hate dat! too-too show-offey and too-besides dey often too slick for my taste, mon.like dey want have NOthing less dan perfection--everting berry berry pristine here--no de rough edges. too much de production sometimes,mon.but for de most part, berry good songs!!!hard to place dem--like if de cocteau twins maybe be joined by de elliot smith.

Pinback for life
I thought I knew my favorite band until I heard this band. Pinback is the real deal for people who prefer relaxing mood music. Coldplay was my favorite until I was introduced to Pinback

The album's content itself is a 5/5, but the vinyl leaves a lot to be desired. As others have said, it sounds like a CD master thrown straight to vinyl with not much forethought. There isn't much going on in terms of dynamics. Unless you just 'gotta have it', stick to digital, streaming, or CD.

Pinback is criminally underrated. This is such a good album and it's a good pressing too. Sounds really good

trop de finesse, de subtilité, de richesse, de fragilité, de sensibilité, et même d'ardeur ! dans ce monde brute et rugueux aux oreilles assourdies de formatage;un rapport avec l'enfance comme à une autre époque un robert wyatt du temps de soft avec kevin ayersun disque à garder au fond des oreilles sans pouvoir s'en lasser
