A bold, readable, and beautifully illustrated introduction to Islamic art and architecture, this renowned book is now available in an updated and revised edition featuring color illustrations throughout. Including over a thousand years of history and stretching from the Atlantic to the borders of India and China, Islamic Art and Architecture is an unparalleled narrative of the arts of Islamic civilization. From the death of the Prophet Muhammad to 1900, Islamic art expert Robert Hillenbrand traces the evolution of an extraordinary range of art forms, including architecture, calligraphy, book illumination, painting, ceramics, glassware, textiles, and metalwork. This new edition includes a chapter examining art produced from 1700 to 1900, an understudied period in the area, exploring how these centuries saw incredible creativity across the Islamic world. Featuring full-color illustrations of masterpieces of Islamic art and architecture, from seventh-century Arabia via Moorish Spain to modern Iran, this book shows the far-reaching stylistic developments that have shaped Islamic art. Including maps, an updated glossary, and suggested further reading, this authoritative and accessible volume sheds light on the recurrent preoccupations and themes that have shaped the arts of Islam since the seventh century. 227 color illustrations Review: Amazing book - I ordered this book for my upper Art history class for Islamic architecture class which was so much fun. If you ever run across a Dr Morris please take her class immediately. She is amazing professor and a world class Art historian. I am keeping this book to help with traveling Review: Excellent book. Useful introduction to a massive subject - When I bought this book, I was taking an introductory course on Islamic art and architecture at a local university. Our class textbook, however, was written in such a convoluted, dense, unengaging manner that I dreaded doing my reading assignments. Hillenbrands book , though scholarly, draws the reader skillfully into the world of Islamic history. It covers much of the same material as my textbook, but Hillebrand is A WRITER as well as historian. I highly recommend the book to anyone beginning to explore Islamic art.

really wonderful, comprehensive book
really wonderful, comprehensive book. I wish it followed up a bit more with contemporary examples, as many modern and contemporary islamic works draw heavily on the influence and motifs of the past. overall a great and informative book.

Waste of money
Wrong information, a personal point of view of the history. There is no sufficient explanation of the artistic perspective, badly written with a lot of confusion
