A visual feast of eclectic artwork informed and inspired by spiritual beliefs, magical techniques, mythology and otherworldly experiences. Mystical beliefs and practices have existed for millennia, but why do we still chase the esoteric? From the beginning of human creativity itself, image-makers have been drawn to these unknown spheres and have created curious artworks that transcend time and place โ but what is it that attracts artists to these magical realms? From theosophy and kabbalah , to the zodiac and alchemy ; spiritualism and ceremonial magic , to the elements and sacred geometry โ The Art of the Occult introduces major occult themes and showcases the artists who have been influenced and led by them. Discover the symbolic and mythical images of the Pre-Raphaelites ; the automatic drawing of Hilma af Klint and Madge Gill ; Leonora Carrington 's surrealist interpretation of myth , alchemy and kabbalah ; and much more. Featuring prominent, marginalised and little-known artists , The Art of the Occult crosses mystical spheres in a bid to inspire and delight . Divided into thematic chapters (The Cosmos, Higher Beings, Practitioners), the book acts as an entertaining introduction to the art of mysticism โ with essays examining each practice and over 175 artworks to discover. The art of the occult has always existed in the margins but inspired the masses, and this book will spark curiosity in all fans of magic, mysticism and the mysterious . Good for anyone interested in the occult
Itโs a handsome, fairly small book, on almost every page there is a work of art and next to it a small caption giving a brief overview of the work or the artist. I think the book is slightly let down by a lack of historical range, most of the art is post-20th century with a small selection of older works, and also sadly (in my personal opinion of course) a lack of good taste in contemporary occult art. The book, in size and theme is pretty similar to โall good thingsโ by Stephen Ellcock, another beautiful, small art book that I actually prefer. Saying this however, there are some gems in this book and it looks good on a shelf. I imagine it would be a great gift for anyone interested in esotericism.

A cornucopia of occult images and ideas
โThe Art of the Occult: A Visual Sourcebook for the Modern Mysticโ by S. Elizabeth is a lavish book containing reproductions of artworks representing a variety of esoteric and occult subjects. I felt that S. Elizabeth brought together a very exciting collection. Accompanying the art S. Elizabeth has written an informative Introduction and twelve thematic chapters grouped under three categories: The Cosmos, Higher Beings, and Practitioners. I was impressed with the range of artists included. I was already familiar with many of these including classic artists such as Goya and Dรผrer, the Pre-Raphaelites, modern abstract artists such as Mondrian and Kandinsky, and many Surrealists. However, quite a few of the more recent artists were unknown to me and I found their work inspiring. Itโs a book that is likely to appeal to art lovers as well as those interested in the occult. S. Elizabeth also includes suggestions for further reading, an index and of course picture credits. Overall, a cornucopia of occult images and ideas. Itโs a book that I am delighted to add to my library.

it was promising but...
This was one of the few books i returned, it was promising at first glance (maybe because of the images) but such subject requires a serious research to make it readable, useful the text is very poorly written, there isn't much content.

Occult art through the ages
Iโve been waiting patiently for this book to arrive and it did not disappoint! S. Elizabethโs book is both informative and inspiring. She gives an outline of occult inspired art of more than 10 centuries, also sharing contemporary works and a good number of female artists. In this book youโll find familiar artworks as well as quite a few new ones to discover! An excellent source guide!

Amazing Collection of Art Images
I was Very Pleasantly Surprised! Instead of some mumbo-jumbo spells, or grotesque images from forgotten corners of creepy cults, the Images and Art is Beautiful. There is so much variety, and although I am heisatent to endorse anything religious, I think this is a great Collection of Art, spanning through lots of eras and genres to represent human thought regarding Magic, the Cosmos, and Divinity. I also think the image formatting used in the kindle edition is well-done, with nice large images to zoom.
