OK Here is my thoughts on this. I have been a global traveler for about 10 years now. I carry a back pack because I also have been in places where a roller is not convenient. The OGIO replaced a Swiss Army that I had for years but the shoulder straps started to tear out I have yet to send it in for warranty. I was looking for a bag that was a bit smaller then the Mystery Ranch that I was using in Iraq and Afghanistan 3000 Cubic Inches. Great back for the long term traveler like me. But a little bulky and I tended to carry to much stuff. OK so now you know I know what I'm talking about. I would go for the OGIO given what you have said about occasional travel, leaning to more school loads. The Thule looks great but the organization of the compartments looks like it leaves a lot to be desired over all construction looks the same between the bags.  I carry a Laptop, an Ipad, a Kindle Fire, Iphone, Samsung Note, three hard drives, magazines, three pairs of glass's, Plus some other pocket fillers. So I have max loaded the OGIO. PRO's the construction is quality, extra handle on top works well, shoulder straps are set more for a medium build frame, the side pockets and other pockets do allow for excellent organization, and things stay put, It also fits airline overhead campartments and I feel the laptop protection is much more superior and I have suffered laptop damage from poor construction on other bags CONS: The shoulder straps do dig a bit in my shoulders if it is worn to low (sagging) and the do work loose but they are also really new and should wear in a but with a bit of weathering. It is a bit big for campus but is a great bag. I expect the OGIO to last 4-5 years with my load out and amount of usage. IE I travel half way around the world every 2 months and I'm currently living in Africa. However I do wish I had the mystery ranch then I could carry my camera also. DSLR that I use on Scuba Diving trips. Thule PROS: looks to be construction I'm unable to verify (go look in the local malls) nice color, drink holder. CONS: It will last 3-5 years with good care, Shoulder straps will tear out with collage text books in there traveling around on campus. NO LAPTOP carrier, These are big investments you can not afford to have a electronic device get damaged in your bag, it will happen at the most inopportune time (right before that big paper is due). SO if your on the fence due to price go for the OGIO Bandit or Squadron they are just a touch smaller and don't have as many pockets as the Renegade. Organization is the best things to have in a bag. With the Thule it is a great High school bag but would not be in the faster paced live of a college student that will travel. Also your comparing an apple to an orange if you put the Thule up against the OGIO Renegade. Hope that answers the question.

For what it's worth... 3/12/22... Black Pindot, sold by Amazon, DID have the luggage pass thru!  Description did NOT list it but one of the images showed it, another image did not.  But it was free returns so I rolled the dice and got lucky.

What range of torso lengths does this pack fit?

Fully adjustable to meet comfort level in all torso ranges. Without getting into the specs...I’m 6’3” and 195 lbs, wife is 5’2” 115 lbs. We both have a renegade. You can’t go wrong regardless of torso. Every time I revue this backpack, I say the same thing. If your going to spend the money on a quality work/school back pack, this is your only option. Price is reasonable and worth every penny.

Question 4

Will the reactive suspension system protection actually work for the new macbook which is only 1/2" thick?

The laptop sleeve/pocket/compartment is well padded and fairly snug. I have a smallish 3/4" thick laptop I carry and am very comfortable with it. 1/2 inch is pretty thin and it probably will slide around in the compartment but it is pretty well padded.  Watch out for the tendency for the whole bag to fall over though. That would be my biggest concern with a fragile piece...
