how far down can this detector detect?

I have owned my 540 for 8 months so far and have found coins almost 8 inches down so far, depending on the soil conditions I believe it can go deeper. hope that helps. its a darn good machine I enjoy it.

Is the unit completely waterproof?

No. Only the searchcoil and lower stem are waterproof. It comes with an environmental control housing cover to use in light rain but no not submerge the control unit under water.
