Can you tell just by looking which orientation will be the fast (usb 3.0) one? or do you just have to test it with each device/cable?

Just make sure that our adapter is plugged into the 3.0 / 3.1 USB-A interface, then the USB-C cable in your hand will determine the orientation of its high speed. We don’t know the positive and negative poles of your cable. So just test it each time. But You can remember the high-speed orientation of the cable to avoid repeating the test next time.

Why would you want the connector to operate at low speed? You're seriously expecting people to plug the usb-c cable in and run a speed test? wṭf?

If the port of your usb-c webcam is usb2.0 / 3.0, then our products will be suitable for you. If your usb-c webcam port is usb3.1, then obviously it won't work, you need a computer c port with usb3.1.
BTW, usb 2.0 / 3.0 cable is generally thin, while usb3.1 cable is relatively thick.

Will this be fast enough to plug in a thunderbolt 3 cable?

The highest speed of this C to USB converter is 10Gbps, and the highest speed of Thunderbolt 3 cable is 40Gbps. There is no problem to use USB-A compatible device after connecting, but it can not reach the speed of Thunderbolt 3 protocol (40Gbps).
