What is the bar spacing? Is it small enough for ferrets not to escape?

The spacing is 3.5cm x 13.5cm I don’t know how big your ferret is but the wife hasn’t managed to escape yet.

Can extra shelves be purchased for this?

No you could add the small animal shelf’s that’s screw on to the crate but it’s not really something you should require as it’s for temporary housing, try adding a hammock hanging for extra use and run and sleep area, that’s what I done and works brilliant

How do small kittens get onto the shelves without ramps?

I thought the exact same when I built the cage as the size it impressive, when my kitten arrived she was 12 weeks (the suitable age to purchase them) so she was very much able to jump between the shelf’s, you can lover them down and arrange them to be more suitable , the bottom level of very large as well so you could fit a litter box , bed and food and water bowls on that level temporarily until kitten is big enough to jump around
