Fallout 3 is a great open world FPS/RPG!
Fallout 3 does not stray too far from previous Fallout games storylines. It is a lot like the precious games in some ways except made by Bethesda and in full 3D.The game takes place in a huge open world with a day/night cycle similar to the Grand Theft Auto series but with better detail, graphics, textures and atmosphere plus sound and voice acting. You play as a Vault dweller who sets out from Vault 101, in search of his father, a scientist who broke out of the Vault for certain reasons. The universe of the Fallout series takes place in a world where even in the year 2070 and beyond it has stayed in a 1950's mindset. Technology got bigger, not smaller. The USA, China and Russia launched nuclear bombs one day at each other, destroying most of the world. You emerge as a Vault dweller in each game from a Vault into a wasteland full of danger, mystery, surprise and many quests. Fallout 3 is no exception. Pros: Huge, detailed open world to explore Over a hundred locations in the wasteland, from schools, hospitals, hotels, vaults, houses, city's, towns, etc. Over a dozen weapons from guns to flamethrowers to grenades and plasma rifles Can be played in first person or third person view Character creation at beginning of game is a plus Several RPG elements, character leveling with experience Lockpicking is fun Enemies from mutants, wildlife, bandits and robots Realistic physics, damage, cool explosions Richly detailed environments Great graphics, character models, voice acting Fantastic sound, atmosphere Realistic ballistics Engaging storyline, quests, multiple choices and dialog options to make Interesting characters and factions Ability to eat and sleep, dress Cons: Repetitive combat Main quest feels liner Game crashes sometimes so save and save often! All in all a great, all.time classic from Bethesda. Run on a: Dell Optiplex GX620 PC with a P4 HT CPU at 3.4ghz, 2GB DDR2 Ram, 80GB HD with 20 GB free space, SoundMax sound (onboard) HD Radeon LP 6450 1GB DDR3 video card, Windows XP Home SP3, runs on high settings

Great Game That I Highly Recommend!
I wasn't sure if I'd like this game or not because I was concerned it was a first person shooter which I can't play (they make me feel sick). I was really excited though that while it "can" be an FPS, it can also be played as a 3rd person shooter. I had no problems at all, I really loved that you can create and customize your own character. I prefer to play as a character I create rather than some predetermined character which is usually a generic looking white guy. Anyway, I was really pleasantly surprised by this game. I took a risk on it, unsure of whether or not I would like it but I really did. Theres good and bad though, so here's my thoughts, first the bad: 1. The main quest is pretty short I think and you can knock it out quick, but you don't want to because one of the drawbacks of the game is that once its done, the game is done. There's no freeplay after that last main quest mission. I would have liked to have been able to go do more exploration or quests after the final main one or even to talk to people afterwards to find out their thoughts at that point. 2. There's a real lack in different bad things to kill, I count roughly a dozen or so different creatures and that's about it and you see most of the different creatures pretty early on in the game, so there's really not a lot of surprises. Further, I found I could kill pretty much anything I ran up against fairly early in the game, so the stuff didn't really get more challenging. 3. I think there's a disconnect between levels and experience. Either theres not enough levels or you get thru them too quickly. I found myself maxed out at level 20 maybe 1/3 of the way thru the game. That meant that I didn't see any motivation or benefit really to continuing to do certain activities as there was no experience. 4. There's a real limit to how much cool stuff there is in the game. Again you see the same stuff over and over and there's not a lot of rare items, nor do the items get better as you progress. That would have made more sense to me, better weapons and armor as you progress and encounter harder and harder foes. Also, because of this, I found myself with lots of lots of caps (in game money) with nothing worthwhile to spend it on really, this took away motivation to bother to gather things because I didn't need the money anyway. 5. I get that there's only so much they can do, but still, every house seems to have the same internal layout, the tunnels all look the same inside, etc, just the configurations change. Its not a big problem, but its consistent with weapons, armor and creatures in terms of a lack of real diversification. 6. There's a lack of diversification of faces, maybe a dozen or two and so you tend to see the same faces over and over, especially on the raiders. 7. Shooting when you're not in VATS, especially on a PC is a little tricky, but not impossible. 8. I would have liked to have seen some romance options, but that's just me, a romantic at heart. 9. It ends kind of abruptly. I would have expected the last mission to be a really tough battle royale kind of a "the biggest test" of the game if you will, but it wasn't. That's consistent with the fact that nothing really gets any harder or more challenging throughout, it all kind of stays at the same level even as you get slightly better weapons or much better skills or attributes, really it just gets easier as you go so for me, the end was really easy and I wasn't expecting it to end when it did. and the good: 1. I really enjoyed this game and felt sad when it ended, I think because it really does have a great story that draws you in and truly makes you feel connected. 2. The voice work is nice. Liam Neeson plays the father. Malcom McDowell as the President, both have amazing voices. 3. While more diversity of music and radio station choices would have been nice, I did enjoy listening to the music and news of Galaxy News Radio. The old style music was a neat contrast against the wasteland. 4. The world is very big and the environment is beautiful and detailed. I would have liked to have seen it be a fully usable/destructable world like in some other games, but walking around, especially at sunrise or sunset, this is a really cool looking place with lots to see, lots to explore. 5. Tons of little side quests ranging from small nothing things to bigger things, so plenty to do. 6. I liked the karma system and how people respond to you is based on that. Its not something you set in a window like I'm going to have X karma and be evil, its more based on your choices which I think is how it should be. 7. VATS makes shooting pretty easy and the slow motion of body parts flying everywhere when you hit something is a neat bonus. So for whatever shortcomings the game has, I highly highly recommend it. It plays out more as an RPG (role playing game) than a pure shooter. You're not just shooting at stuff with no reason, this has a real story and you're a character in a world that you feel connected with. There's a bunch of DLC add on content too but I didn't buy into that. So if you're good with 3rd person shooter games (or 1st person) like GTA, Saints Row, Dragon Age, etc, you may very much like this one.

Great game and more than expected.
I’m gonna try to keep this short. I did not buy this to actually “play” the game, although it did start a play through to make sure it worked. It does. I have played this game a dozen times through Xbox and Steam, so the only reason I bought this was for the xbox achievements. I spent $3 on the game in total. Got a nice extra in that shipping was just ignored. So the used copy I bought from a goodwill which was expected 2 weeks after order date came early - 3 days after. But anyway, once it was received, I put it in my pc disc drive and let it install. Took about 30 minutes which meant that installation was harder than 100%ing the game lol. Once it had started I signed into XBL and typed ~ then “addachievement 1” and so on until you get to #72. That’s 1500 gamerscore in literally 40 minutes. Runs fine on windows 10 too although I hear that GFWL is finicky. If you get confused, look at the forums for FO3PC on Trueachievements.com.

Failout 3
I was a huge fan of the first two games, and for the hour that I got to play this one, it was absolutely awesome. The insertion into the Fallout world in a 1st-person perspective was perfect. I personally had no problem whatsoever with installation. The game installed fine, though it took forever, and played just fine until I hit one particular spot (an unavoidable spot, of course) and it crashed to the desktop. Every time. After communicating with Bethesda tech support and reading the "PC issues" forum for this game exhaustively, and trying every suggestion that was made, I gave up. I spent $50 and several hours time in exchange for a single hour of entertainment. I have an excellent system that easily exceeds the requirements, and as I said the game was running and looking excellent up to that point. And I'm hardly alone. Check out the forum yourself, 24 hours after release there are over 16 PAGES of threads from people that cannot play this game, and hardly all of them are securom related. I am disgusted and disappointed. This was the first Bethesda product I have ever bought, and if they can't be bothered to test their software any better than this before releasing it, this was my last. You can shear a sheep as many times as you like, but you can only skin it once. Consider me skinned. Edit: October 2009, just short of a year later and someone gave me this game as a gift. I was finally able to isolate the problem, it was in the keymapping of all things. If I leave the controls at their default locations the game works flawlessly. Not a single crash since I installed it. Also, between the time this review was originally written and now I've built an entirely new machine, different motherboard with a different chipset, different video card, different processor, different ram (same capacity, different brand and speed), everything has been replaced and before I found the default keymapping solution it froze in *exactly the same place*. This is a software problem, plain and simple, and something as ridiculously simple as this should never have seen the light of day. Now that I am finally able to play the game, it is simply awesome. I love the scenery, the atmosphere, VATS is excellent, the dialogue is good, many excellent characters to meet and interact with, no complaints whatsoever. This is probably the first time that I am actually looking forward to replaying a game before I even finish it. I am finally getting used to the new control layout and am enjoying the game very much.

Great game
So the game/story is fine. But it's buggy as hell. If you have a modern PC made within the last few years DO NOT BUY THIS! If you have an older PC, running a 32 bit OS then you might have luck and can enjoy it. Just do a google search for Fallout 3 freezing or Windows 7 or Windows 8 and you'll see endless pages upon pages of similar problems. The reasons range from it not being able to handle quad core cpus, not liking nvidia cards, having some codec problem...yadda yadda yadda the point is that I haven't found anything to get it from stop freezing after some events. Basically the game is just unplayable. Older PC, give it a shot. Especially if you buy it used or something. New PC, seroiusly don't waste your time. And if you do and actually get it to work then you're a luckier person than myself. UPDATE: It's been years and went through my old reviews. I did finally get it to work somehow but I can't remember how. I do remember I had spent a lot of time to get it to work. At the time I was on a very spotty internet connection and was unable to use steam so I bought this specifically because it came as a disk and wouldn't have a big download issue. If you buy it as a download you might not have my issue. Having said that it IS a very fun game. A word of advice, if you're new to the Fallout series and thinking about getting Fallout 4 I suggest starting with 3, then getting New Vegas THEN getting Fallout 4. The reason being the graphics on Fallout 4 is noticeably better and going from 4 down to 3 might put off too many people, I know it does me. On top of that you'll get any references in 4 made about 3.

Looking Back
I'm not going to lie; this game was one of the best I'd ever played when I first bought it. But now that I've finished it a couple of times I've figured out how to level up quickly and which skills/perks to choose. Now I can practically play it blindfolded while listening to the radio and holding a conversation with my mother while eating Chinese food.

Doesn't run on my laptop
Be careful if you buy this game, its picky about which video cards you can use. It wouldn't run on my laptop which was an Acer Extensa 5630-4666. From reading the tech support the video card was the issue and that's happening to a number of folks without there being a solution. I got a copy of it for a PS3 and loved it though and ran with no problems.
