do these bags have a smell to them?

Only new fabric type smell, they need to be pre washed before food use.

Are these ok to use for food? Going to use for a coffee filter while backpacking.

I would recommend the natural drawstrings as the eyes are not certified food safe. The all natural cloth and drawstring bags will work.

what are the dimensions of these mini bags?

The product description says, "These bags are approximately 2.74x4 inches (6.5x10cm)... There may be a variance of up to 1/8 to 1/4 inch due sizing / natural shrinkage. Please allow a little extra room for cinching and expansion." I ordered 200 for my wedding and all were about the same size. To be safe, I'd say the exterior dimensions are 2.5" x 3.5". But, with the draw string cinched, the interior size is about 2.25" x 3".
