Horacio Hornblower hits the Game Table
I have never actually been to sea, but have read, and re-read, all of E.M. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower novels of naval action during the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century. Black Seas is a wonderful recreation of the flavor of naval combat of that era. Pros: 1. The starter box is a generous introduction. It includes a full-on naval mat, (a costly add-on if you do not have one.) A well-organized, and we’ll illustrated 75 page book which covers the rules, a number of scenarios, instructions on painting and rigging the included miniatures, and an introduction to the history of the period. As well as spruces to build nine(!) miniatures. All interesting. 2. The game play is intuitive and very much retains the flavor of sailing and combat in an age where the wind controlled all movement on the sea. 3. The scenarios, based on stories, add historical interest and flavor to the game. 4. Black Seas has produced a large number of add-on sets, which will greatly extend the interest and longevity of the game. They also appear to be trying to extend the game system to earlier periods. Cons: (1). It will take a long time to get the game from the box onto the table. The minis must be built first, from the plastic sprues.. If you just want to buy an Age of Sail game and put it right out on the table, you might look at Flying Colors, or even Wooden Ships and Iron Men, available on EBay. (2). Not sure if this is a con for all players, but there are a lot of “additional rules”, with no guidance which should be used or ignored. Some of these sure look like they belong in the basic rules.

It's a great and the models are marvelous
Love the game and the models. Hate the package. The box is very weak and cannot resist an international shipment, plus Amazon don't use a sturdy and well protected box.

More than just a game
Good value in this set and can often be found at a real bargain. Be aware besides a rule set you have ship models that must be built, painted, and even rigged if you desire. You can build this set as ships from several nations (France, the U.S., Spain or the Royal Navy). The models make a nice presentation on the table top. There are a number of expansions available to grow your navy. There are many Youtube videos to help you with all the ways you can enjoy this game. This is a nice start to Black Seas.

Pretty cool looking game.
I love the looks of the game. I was perusing through the rulebook and it does look like a lot of fun. The ships are unpainted which is fine for me because I do like painting. The ships are very well detailed. I wasn't expecting the ships to be small pieces that need to be glued together to play, however I am okay with that. I will say that I like the looks and feel of the sails and all the pieces. My only complaint is that I wanted all the countries represented for customizability since the cards are specificto the boat and not necessarily the country. I will say that the back of the box does say that you can do British, French, and pirate ships, however I couldn't see the box contents. I would have enjoyed the ability to do Spanish and US ships if I wanted. The rulebook is a beautiful colored softback book. Care needed to be taken to remove the tokens and other cardstock items, but they looked great. I would definitely buy it again.
