Hinterland is an honest and heartwrenching look at the problems faced by youths who must flee poorer countries, seeking safety and a future in the industrialized nations. Ms. Brothers is a keen observer of society and its contradictions. She has a reporter's eye for details but a novelist's sense of how to craft a story. Hinterland swiftly propels the reader through the route taken by a pair of brothers, and movingly shares their setbacks and progress. The ending will shock and surprise. A great read.
