A very, very small amount of blue food coloring the tip of a fork’s worth. Unless you desire a Mediterranean blue.

Instructions did not come with mine either. In order to make it work I had to cut the cord length and fasten the shortened cord to the water pump. The pump on my unit worked fine, but when I turned it on, the water would not flow because the cord was kinked. I hope this helps, it was frustrating to figure out, but I didn't want to return it.
