Review: Good quality, but at a premium price - This is an excellent academic reference for English language learners. Even for a paperback, the quality of binding and typeface is excellent. It is more comprehensive than the Longman Advanced American Dictionary, and is on par with Merriam Webster’s Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary. Easy to read, lots of helpful word usage examples. Since it bills itself as an American Dictionary, it is sometimes puzzling why they included certain words or phrases, like ‘jai alai’, or ‘crying jag’, and yet omitted others like ‘mailing it in’. In the end, this is a book worth having if you are OK paying a premium for it. If you want something less expensive, go for Merriam Webster’s Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary.
