Is this mat soft enough to just have socks on while on it in the kitchen, not looking for a stiff mat with no shoes on??

It is very soft. No need for shoes or socks with this mat.

how easy is it to clean. it looks like there's a weave in surface. doesn't that catch food particles and need to be scrubbed ?

I love the feel of these underfoot but they always look dirty. Who wants to scrub grooves with a tooth brush. A nice slick finish is what it needs. Mine are very new and if i could find slick ones I would totally toss these.
