Great sound for your dollar
I've been wanting a home theater audio setup in my basement for a while now so when these speakers went on sale in June I snagged them. I paired them with an Onkyo receiver I got used from a friend, and after a couple hours of mucking around in my ceiling we got everything set up and calibrated. Before I talk about the audio, I'd like to describe the speakers themselves, which are quite good looking. The fabric coverings are quite high quality, the plastic cases are unobtrusive and nice looking, and the sub will vanish surprisingly well with good placement. The speakers hang by two screw slots, and are light enough to put almost anywhere. I put my front speakers directly on the wall and my back speakers on shelves so they could be turned into the room. There are only two issues when mounting the speakers, and in fact these are the only issues in general. First, while the spring clips you connect your speaker wire to are big and easy to use, there is no channel for the wire in the back of the speaker housing. In other words, if you want the speakers mounted directly to the wall (which looks great, by the way) you'd better run your wire through the wall too because the wire needs to come out DIRECTLY behind the speaker. Second, the speakers can only wall-mount facing straight out, so if you don't have walls on both sides of your viewing area, you will need shelves like I got. I am not dinging the item any stars for this as these are both common issues in surround sound speakers, and I don't want to gripe too much about 80 dollar speakers... ...Especially when they sound so good! In spite of their size, there is not a trace of tinniness to these speakers, and properly calibrated via your receiver, they will provide SEAMLESS surround sound. I just let a movie play the other night and walked between them; except when a sound was meant to come from a certain direction it was almost impossible to tell that what I was hearing was coming from any one speaker. Even when you listen to a basic stereo or mono video, the audio will fill a small space very effectively. And when you do watch something in 5.1, the quality is really excellent. It may sound like an odd choice, but when I showed my son one of the Thomas the Tank Engine films last night (yes there are Thomas MOVIES, and yes they are in 5.1) the distribution and depth of audio was really spot on. If you have a small to midsized room, I would not hesitate to buy these speakers, even at full price. They are an outstanding value. Just be aware that you will need a receiver to use them (or any device with 5.1 output, I suppose).

Great speakers on a budget!
These are great speakers for a relatively small room (the room I put these in is about 14x14). They sound much better than I expected, especially considering the price these are being sold for. I was very skeptical about buying these, but couldn't afford the $400 for the Energy speakers that I wanted. So I settled for these, and I'm not disappointed at all in my decision. I paired these with an Onkyo HT-RC360 and, after about 2 hours of tweaking the sound, couldn't be happier. The included speaker wire is very thin, so plan to spend a few extra dollars for at least 16-gauge wire. The sub is powered, and is more than sufficient - it throws a lot of bass for its size. It sounds pretty decent with streaming music too, but it really shines when watching movies with a 'bright' soundtrack, that typically accompanies movies with lots of action sequences. I also hooked up a Playstation 3 to the receiver...the soundtrack on Gran Turismo 5 is like night and day...simply amazing, compared to when it was hooked up directly to the TV, with the sound coming from the TV speakers. It's true that you get what you pay for. There are better-sounding speakers out there, but for the price and capability, you cannot beat these at this price point...especially if your intent is to watch movies; and not as an audiophile, listening to music mainly with a critical ear on the musician's performance. Highly recommended if you meet the following criteria: 1. Have a relatively small room (14x14) 2. Plan to pair with a decent receiver, for the purpose of watching movies mainly (and playing games), while listening to music on occasion via streaming Audio, connecting an iPod, etc. 3. A budget of $140 (this includes the speakers and 2 spools of 16-guage wire, at 14 dollars a spool) The package arrives very well-packed, and the speakers themselves are contained in a plastic housing, but substantial. I mounted the satellites on Atlantic speaker stands. The satellites are light enough that you can mount on the stands with double-sided tape, and still have a very secure mount. As with any set of speakers, it is critical that they are all positioned and calibrated correctly, so that you get optimum performance from them. Expect to spend at least 3-4 hours: 2 hours to unpack, position the speakers, strand speaker wire, and connect; and another 1-2 calibrating distance, and volume, to your preference. 5 stars for price, quality, and value.

Very good sound quality for a cheap price
These speakers are a real bargain. The subwoofer sold alone is roughly $110 which leaves these speakers cost at about $40 or ~ $7/front, $7/surround, $12/center speaker. The subwoofer is actually really good getting low in the frequency range for such a cheap speaker. It also had some control and didn't sound boomy at all. It does lack vital features as a phase switch which helps with standing waves when you can't put the sub in an optimal spot. It also lacks speaker inputs and a low pass crossover for use with receivers that don't offer a subwoofer preamp out or one with an adjustable crossover. So this subwoofer must be used with a compatible home theater receiver. Overall a real nice sounding subwoofer when used with the right receiver. The speakers sound really good for their size and price. The tonal characteristic is really nice without any annoying anomalies. The speakers sound really good and sound much more expensive than what they are. They do give up on an expansive soundstage but with the very small size of the speakers, it's only reasonable. Imaging isn't up to par as with my Infinity tower speakers or the Infinity bookshelf speakers, but those speakers are much larger and much more expensive. Also the output sound pressure level on these Yamaha speakers isn't as high as larger bookshelf speaker but loud enough for a bedroom system. The sound does get compressed at very loud levels but as stated, what can you really expect from a 2.5" woofer that is smaller than yesteryear's cone tweeters. Overall the speaker system is a bargain for such a cheap price and such good sound quality. I had a Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system that I've been using on the bedroom TV to compare to. The reason for buying these Yamaha speakers is that the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 was OK for a computer but doesn't sound very good for home theater or music listening. Those Klipsch speakers are very shouty sounding and become irritating after prolonged listening. Their subwoofer doesn't have near the output that the Yamaha Subwoofer has either but it's a smaller 6.5" sub. That Powered 2.1 System was about $150 years ago so this Yamaha 5.1 surround system with much better sound quality is really a great deal. The Amazon basics 100' 16 gauge speaker wire is also very good for it's $10.99 price. Usually cheap wire that's 100' and 16 gauge is around $20.

For the price it's worth 5 stars
I wouldn't give 5 stars to this if it cost $200 or $300, but for the price it's worth it. I hooked these up to a new Yamaha RX-V773 and they worked without a hitch. I have 5 HDMI inputs coming into it that these are producing sound for - Xbox 360, PS3, Uverse DVR, Alienware media center PC, and a Wii U. It's great playing games and hearing that surround sound, knowing where something is behind you by the sound. Movies reproduce well also. I also have great playback of music, up to this point mostly kids songs, a few soundtracks for PIxar and Disney movies, and some of my Jazz and Rock. I'll have to fire up some Classical when it won't scare the 9 year old. Sub is adjustable so you can fine tune it manually if you can't do so via whatever amp or receiver you're running them from. The cable was weak - I had one speaker that wouldn't hold it in the clamp, although the others did. I just doubled up that end and it worked fine. I'm planning on replacing it anyway since I have to run the rear channel through the basement to get them off the floor, but for now I"m using the thin cheap stuff they sent and it still sounds great. I had looked at two systems, both just shy of $400, but I figured I'd give these a shot first. I have a 9 year old so he's not a fan of high volume, so I have no plans on ever cranking up to a serious sound level, and figured these should work. And they have, just wonderfully so far.

Missing a lot of sound
I must remember "Never trust reviews never trust reviews" especially when it comes to audio. People please, if you buy this system you are going to be missing out on so much sound. I already have a Cerwin-Vega 5.1 system and wanted to downsize speakers to go better with my HDTV. I tried about 3 of the Home Theater in the box units from Sony and Panasonic. They were missing sound like the sound of a guitar pick on the strings, the slicing sound of a knife, the thump of a basketball on the court. I saw the reviews and thought this system might be different. But alas it is not and this unit sounds so bad it sounds like the speakers are made out of paper. Oh wait, look at the specs, they ARE made of paper lol. Size and weight does matter when it comes to speakers. None of these small satellite speakers are going to be able to produce true sound because the woofers on them are too small. If you truly want good sound then buy speakers that are 2 way and at least a 4 inch woofer. The sub-woofer is pretty lame as well. After plugging back in my AVS cerwin-vegas (only paid $250 for 8 years ago and these can still be found on the web or ebay cheap) after listening to these Yamahas, I'm like ahhh...this is what sound should be like. I didn't realize how good my speakers are until i tried all these small systems. Yeah these are only $130 but you are going to have $130 sound. Anybody who writes a review in here saying these sound as good as higher end systems doesn't know what they are talking about. To add to that, one of my speakers had funny sounding crackle to it. Maybe it was the paper cone. These go back to Amazon.

Theater Sound At Home!
I am writing this review after my first evening of thoroughly enjoying these speakers: Since getting a Smart TV, we were using a very good soundbar with a wireless subwoofer. And I must say that I was basically satisfied with the sound it gave us. It was certainly superior to the pathetic sound attempted by the TV's built-in "speakers." But I wanted to graduate from a soundbar to surround sound. I hesitated for days before ordering these speakers. In spite of the the 4 and 5 star reviews this System received from most of the current 532 reviewers, I could not get past how "cheap" the speakers looked in the picture. DO NOT MAKE THAT SAME MISTAKE. The photo that accompanies this item does NOT do the System justice! The speakers are much more attractive when you see them, than the photo would lead you to believe. I will say this... they are smaller than I expected, but what they lack in size, they MORE THAN make up for in terms of bringing the sound of a Movie Theater right into my living room! The sound is clear, crisp and powerful. The bass is deep and rich and delivers EVERYTHING I could possibly ask for in terms of the kind of sound I want to accompany the movies and programming I watch. When things are blowing up on screen, and the orchestra's score is raising the roof, Yamaha's 5.1 Speaker System absolutely delivers! We have a rectangular living room. The TV is in the center of one of the long sides of the room, with 8' of space on either side to the opposite walls. Now, instead of sound (from the soundbar) coming just from the width of the TV, the entire room is filled with a crescendo of various sounds coming from all directions. These speakers transport me INTO the scene. It is quite incredible, and very satisfying! Are you worried about the speakers' looks? their size? their cost? Relax! These are Yamaha Speakers!! With the very minor exception of having to swap out the included wiring (going from 18? Gauge to 14 Gauge) I am completely satisfied with this purchase FAR beyond my highest expectations! There is only one way you can appreciate what I am hearing: Buy them! You will NOT be sorry!

If you like throwing crappy karaoke parties, this is the speaker you’ve been looking for!
The concept of this speaker is great! It’s compact, has Bluetooth, built in microphones, remote control, and a speaker stand! I thought this was just what I was looking for. I DJ about 50-60 weddings per year. Sometimes the ceremony location and cocktail hour location are far apart from the reception area. Often, I need a speaker and microphone for ceremony. I thought this would be great for ceremonies, because it would essentially require no wires, it’s lightweight, and easy to use. I was pretty excited to use this speaker at my next wedding. So, when it arrived I took it out to test all the features. Here’s what happened. The first thing I unwrapped was the speaker stand. It’s about 3-4 feet tall (1 meter). That is really bad. When the speaker was mounted it was only about 5 feet tall (1.5 meter roughly). When outdoors, the sound will travel better if it is unobstructed. With a 5 foot clearance, almost everything on planet earth will instruct the sound. Hopefully, the power of the speaker will be enough to project...we'll get to that later. Once I got the speaker mounted I turned it on and it started right up. I used the built in fm receiver to tune into a local radio station and got a very clear signal. Then, I switched on the Bluetooth and streamed music from my iPad and it worked great! There was very little delay and the signal was clean and clear. I wanted to see how loud it was, so I slowly cranked up the volume. All the way up was underwhelming. The sound quality was clear, but there is no projection power in this little unit. I know for a fact you wouldn’t be able to hear this speaker outdoors, on a beach, with 50 or more people in the way. And it certainly would not have enough power to sound a room with 100 or more people who were mingling during a cocktail hour. Being hopeful, I still thought it might be ok to use this speaker for smaller weddings...until I tried the microphones. As soon as you pick up the built in wireless mics, you can tell they are cheaply made and not durable. The next thing you notice is the outdated use of 9v batteries to power the mics instead of double A or lithium rechargeable batteries. The power switches are very flimsy and point to old fashioned wireless microphone tech that you might have found in old Radio Shack brand equipment. The sensitivity of these microphones is horrible. The mics practically have to be on your lips to pick up any sound, which torpedos the idea of ever having an officiant be able to use it. If you hold the mics more than 2 or 3 inches away, the don’t pick up the signal. The only good feature about the microphones is that they have a cool reverb feature that seems to work well. Overall, for professional use, this speaker will never cut it. I would recommend this speaker to teenagers who think they can sing, for karaoke parties of 2 or 3 people.

You will be very pleased!
I've owned several sets of speakers over the years some big, some small, expensive and cheap. These look small and are, but don't confuse size with quality. These are among the best speakers I have ever bought. If your goal is to have a solid indoor home theater or party room 5.1 setup then these are it! Let's first grant the fact that one needs to have an excellent receiver. That's the workhorse behind any speaker setup and the cornerstone of an entertainment center. Having a cheap one or worse yet not one at all is simply naive. It either won't deliver enough power to the speakers (very hard on them and also causes crackling) or won't crossover appropriately (splitting the highs and lows). Beyond that I would also like to point out I used my own heavier gauge speaker wire (incredibly cheap to buy). The wire that came with the kit here would work fine I'd think, but was very thin (smaller than any gauge I've ever used). These speakers are a VERY fair price and absolutely blew me away! The bass and lows were very solid and the highs were right on. With the volume turned all the way up to max on my receiver the sound still came out perfectly clear. No crackling, pops or shudders. And there is no way one could reasonably carry on conversation nearby when it's at that volume. I've never had a problem with these speakers and they haven't worn out yet. This is a good choice and is more than enough for your home theater system! Buy with confidence and enjoy!

Great sound
Been using these for over a month now with great results. Very good sound, especially for the price. The manual adjust on the subwoofer is nice too for when you want to dial the bass up or down on the fly. If you're looking for a solid 5.1 system that doesn't break the bank, this is it

Compra completada satisfactoriamente
