Outstanding Food Processor
I got it to replace a 9 year old Cuisinart after the work bowl locking mechanism finally gave up the ghost. Though the machine did its job (or so I thought), the work bowl and lid were flimsy and broke if you looked at it wrong. I re-glued the locking mechanism back together numerous times. It was also difficult to clean. To replace the crappy work bowl and lid was $110. Nope. I settled on the Breville based on my satisfaction with other Breville appliances I have and on reviews online and on UTube. It does not disappoint: Fast, quiet (relatively), and the blades are sharp as blue blazes. Bowl is much sturdier than the Quisinart and the locking mechanism is much less sensitive and easy to use. I’ve done Oreo cookie crust, sliced potatoes, chopped onions, garlic, tomatoes, and cilantro for salsa. Cilantro was perfect. Cut, not bruised. Worth the investment for sure!

They've thought of everything
After about 45 years of use, I decided it was time to retire my OG metal base Cuisinart CFP-5. Searching for "food processor with direct drive," I came across this gem and ordered it. The Sous Chef 12 appears to have gotten a lot of feedback from users and I suspect it went through a lot of testing and iterations before Breville releases it. This machine has (so far) solved for me every problem I had with the old standby. The bowl is made of a thicker plastic that has the feel of being hard to crack or otherwise damage. The bottom of the bowl has a sealed center bearing, so no leakage if you fill the bowl more than halfway. Three different sizes of pushers and pusher openings to handle small or large vegetables. A holder for the sharp blade so you don't cut yourself in the drawer. Properly sized plastic blade, which I rarely use but still. A well-engineered grating, shredding, and slicing blade that can be adjusted for slice thickness or thinness. And as quiet as my OG because it's direct-drive (no internal gears to amp up the noise level). Safety interlocks and labels on everything are well-engineered and don't interfere with use. If this machine won't do what you want it to when you want it to, it's probably because you're risking cutting off a finger or something. One shortcoming, though, is a very short cord, designed for a countertop with an outlet close at hand. I had to add a 2-foot extension cord to reach over the edge and down to the outlet on our prep island. Finally, this 12-cup bowl size is substantially bigger than my OG. I don't think I'd want it bigger unless I was cutting up huge quantities of something to cook for a big crowd. Recommended without reservation.

Love this thing!
Love, love, love! This an excellent food processor and is easy to put the top on. It has one wierd thing I can't remember. It is way better than our past food processors that have broke. We hope it lasts a long while since it was spendy! It is worth it though since it is easy to use and slices veggies perfectly. We love to make hummus, pesto and other thngs in it. It gets it done quickly!

Replacement bowls, blades, and other parts are never available.
Do not buy this food processor. Replacement bowls and blades are not made or sold anywhere! The food processor itself is awesome, until your bowl cracks or breaks (it’s only guaranteed one year), and then the entire unit is worthless. Or, until you need a replacement blade. Our son used our machine to make nut butter (because Breville said the Sous Chef 12 could do that—instead of using the Vitamix which is a bullet proof workhorse—the Sous Chef 12 overheated, and the blade assembly and bowl melted). Replacement bowls for the 12 and 16 are theoretically available on Brevilles’s website and other resellers, except they’re forever on “factory back order” with no ETA listed. Check out eBay, and look at all the Sous Chef motor bases that are available. Not a single solitary bowl is sold anywhere. Ever. Caveat emptor. If you do buy one, treat your bowl like it’s fine Victorian lead crystal. After 8 months, the bowls became available (I bought 2 just in case), but new blades are still “not available” and on back order. A year without a functional food processor? 10 months now and still no blades available, even used ones on EBay—other suckers have scooped them up. Do yourself a favor a buy a Cuisinart. Seriously! I sure wish I had. I might still do so. I give this company 1 star, because a zero is not an option. Oh, and for Pete’s sake! If you ignore my advice and get one anyway (because “that” won’t ever happen to me, please don’t try to make nut butter or anything that might create heat—the plastic used by Breville will not ((WILL NOT)) stand up to any heat, not the dish washer or processing anything that needs to blend for any length of time—use your Vitamix for that!).

Freakin' awesome. Sturdy, powerful, extremely efficient. Easy to use, clean and adjust. Quiet. Finished product is outstanding. Not a mangled mess, nor shredded as though torn by hand. Makes light work of dough preparations. This machine just WORKS. It is large which may make hidden kitchen storage difficult for some but I'm managing nicely. I've had the economy machine in the past and put up with the ineffectiveness, hence a lot of hand work for me. But, this unit is as advertised. If you have a genuine use for a food processor, this is your money well spent.

I have used food processors since the mid 1980s. I have gone through 5... maybe 6 of them? This is definitely a huge step up; lot of money for a kitchen tool, but wow.: what a performance. The bowl is larger than my previous one which is great - perfect for soups, batter, and sausage emulsions. And so easy to clean! The chopping blade is super-efficient: did garlic and jalapenos last night, and I ever never seen a machine chop so evenly. The slicing blade has an adjustable knob so you can vary thicknesses... AWESOMNESS! And it works great! I have not yet tried the grater. Oh and also: the machine is so much more quiet than any machine I have owned before! I would very highly recommend it. The base is heavy - such a powerful motor - but that is OK as I leave it permanently on my kitchen counter.

Bonne qualité, très puissant mais bruyant ! Mais c'est pas important en autant qu'il fonctionne bien et qu'il me dure longtemps !

Great Christmas gift. It works as advertised and good value for the price.

Easy to assemble. Easy to operate. Very quiet. The motor base is heavier than the others that we've which likely reflects quality. Overall the nicest food processor we've ever had. However, this unit must be handled with care. The plastic parts seem less durable than the cheap Hamilton Beach unit that we had previously. My daughter accidently dropped the lid while handling it, and it fell to the vinyl floor, and broke. Fortunately, replacement parts are available from the manufacturer.
