(Solved my tone issues for good!) - If you're like me, you're very particular about tone. For me, it is especially overdrive tones. I have been searching for almost a year for a pedal/amp that gets me to that "perfect" tone. These tubes provided that in an amp that I recently purchased off of a whim just to see what would happen. I purchased a Monoprice 15 Watt EL84 powered amplifier secondhand for a good deal. From the first time I turned it on, I was extremely pleased with how it sounds. Really chimey British type tones, but the overdrive wasn't defined enough for me and was very choppy. So, I went searching for a new set of power tubes to put in the amp to see if that could solve the issue. I was hesitant to buy these as I'm sure you are (the reader) as well. These aren't extremely expensive but they aren't the cheapest thing out there. I did my research to see if these would be worth the extra price over Groove Tubes or JJ's. I decided to buy these and boy am I happy with these things. Mullard tubes were often used by many big artists in the '60s and '70s and it's very evident why once you break these things in a bit. Now, these are "replicas" of the real ones but they sound just as good if not better. Here are my overall thoughts; If you're searching for the perfect tone for your 15 watt whatever amp, look no further. You've found the solution to your problem! These things have those warm and buttery cleans, but when you crank up the gain the overdrive is very crisp and holds together perfectly. For reference, I play a lot of Led Zeppelin and these tubes got me about as close to those Jimmy Page tones as I think I'll ever get without dropping a huge amount of cash. Overall I'm very happy with these tubes and I'll be buying a preamp set of Mullards next to replace those when the stock ones go. What amplifier do you use them on< Thanks, GT** A: I have an Orange Tiny Terror that I have been re-tubing to get as much clean room as possible. I have gone much further on both the VOL & GAIN knobs & still get clean response. With the original tubes that came with my amp, I couldn't go beyond 9 or 10 o'clock on the GAIN knob before the distortion was so massive it became difficult to even hear the pitch. Now, I can easily have both VOL & GAIN around noon with only a touch of hair, which I want because I get all the overdrive coming off my pedalboard. Just don't forget that the pre-amp tubes will make a difference as well. I am using low gain pre-amp tubes & I'm getting much more room to play with before I get anywhere near distortion. I've had the GAIN set around noon & the VOL around 2 o'clock ( outdoors of course ) & still get fairly clean response from my amp. Hope this helps ! I have some Groove Tubes EL84 S tubes which I have been told are VERY similar to JJ EL84 tubes and they have a Medium or Normal Distortion. The sound in my set up is so clear and warm. Nothing tinny sounding or dull like I had experienced with some generic EL84 tubes from China.Here are some definitions I found about distortion with the power tubes.Early Distortion (Groove Tubes - # 1-3) is best for a softer attack, and those who play a lot of rock and blues solos. Average Distortion (Groove Tubes - # 4-7) is great for your normal all around tone - for those who want some versatility in their sound.
