The top pan holds a bit more than one quart. When I poured in a quart of water, there was about an inch of space to the top. However, when filling the bottom pot, is did not hold quite two quarts. I had about 1/2 cup of water left over. This is not an issue for me as I wanted a double boiler and do not use the pots singly. The lid fits on both pots snugly. I have used this pot for making fudge, melting chocolate, and frosting, and I am completely happy with it. I am not sure the bottom of either pot is heavy enough to cook things other than liquids. I use double & triple clads for heavier foods. The stainless steel cleans up well.Hope this helps. **Q: Will this work on induction stovetop?** A: Short answer: No. Longer answer/reason: Induction cooking requires "ferromagnetic" (iron-based magnetic) cookware. Stainless steel 18/10 is iron-based, because the alloy is based on steel, but the numbers "18/10" refer to 18% chromium and 10% nickel in the alloy. Adding chromium makes it "stainless" and adding nickel makes it nonmagnetic.
