Perfect for the Halloween season! (I love a story that takes place all on Halloween night!)The ending seemed a little incomplete, with a few questions unanswered, but I feel like a lot of horror movies do the same thing, just leaving the audience with a sense of foreboding and unease that the danger isn't quite over yet. You have to use your imagination to figure out what happens next. Unless there is a sequel! (I don't think there's a sequel to this, though.)As a writer, I actually skimmed through this book a second time, using it as a mentor text to see where the author decided to reveal answers to readers' questions throughout. Just when you think you know who the killer is, you realize it's probably someone else. And then that person is revealed to be innocent and you have to change theories again. It's so good! And so fun! (I did figure out who the killer was eventually, by the way. Before the book told me who it was.)I highly recommend this one. Just dive in and go for the ride! Obviously, it is not for everyone, but I feel if you like pop culture references, slasher movies, and fast paced books thrillers, you will enjoy this book. To me, it flowed well for what it was and read very well. The author did a good job putting together a fun and corky book.I will recommend this book to anyone who wants a good thriller and fun book! ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars I was hoping it would be better *by T***X on Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2023* This wasn't a bad book, but it felt like it could have been so much better. For one thing, it felt like the narrator's majorly annoying obsession with horror movies kept working against any suspense the author was trying to build; in trying to be ultra meta or something (the main character of "Scream" is literally referenced on the inside cover flap description), I kept feeling like I was being yanked out of the story. I also felt like most if not all of the characters weren't very well developed, although the author did do a decent job of giving us enough detail that you could generally remember who was who.The actual plot though suffers from thriller syndrome. At a certain point, you have to wonder how the killer is constantly several steps ahead, killing multiple people while remaining uncaught. And the reveal of the killer's identity, while certainly surprising, felt tortured. You could kind of understand the logic behind some of the kills, but the author's attempts to explain the other kills added for padding just felt stupid.But the reason the book gets three stars (and I'm being gracious) is because of the ending. It makes no sense and pretty much negates the whole point of the book. Trying to excuse the bad logic and worse ending as "it's just a young adult novel" is lazy; the best young adult novels can compare favorably with the best older adult novels (or however you want to label it, LOL).
