The unit arrives already calibrated but if you want to be sure all you need to do is put 3 drops of distilled water onto the surface of the wedge-shaped glass prism, close the plastic cover over the top to spread the liquid, wait 30 seconds and then look through the eyepiece. You must have a light source (I did my measurements outside). When you look through the eyepiece you will see a blue region on the top and a white region on the bottom and the dividing line between these two regions is your measurement. So for distilled water at 68°F you should see the measurement line directly at what is marked as the “Waterline” which is near the bottom of the scale. The kit includes a plastic carrying case, a flexible plastic dropper for sucking up and depositing drops of liquid, a calibration screwdriver and a soft cleaning cloth. Once you are satisfied the unit is calibrated, you simply retrieve a few drops of whatever liquid you want to test with the flexible plastic dropper and put 3 drops on the glass prism and close the plastic cover to spread the liquid.
