It's soft on your skin and conforms to your neck, leg, shoulder, or where ever you are going to put it. I had shoulder surgery which requires 6 months of rehab. I have been using these pads for the last 3 plus months, every day. We have two, one for hot, and one in the freeze for cold applications. The cold application stays pliable even when left in the freeze for long periods. I suggest you put the pad in a freezer bag to keep it clean and dry while in the freezer. A note about heating the pad in the microwave (never place the pad in the oven). When the pad has not been used for awhile, set your timer for 1:30 seconds. If that is not warm enough, do 15 seconds at a time till warm. Don't over heat the pad! If the pad starts to expand, stop the microwave immediately. Over heating will ruin the pad, and make it too hot to use. Both stay cold, or hot for long periods.
