Box trees are often found in homes and hotel grounds, historical gardens and churches. The larvae overwinter in cocoons spun between its hosts leaves then emerge in spring. High numbers can cause complete defoliation and economic loss. This pack contains one reusable funnel trap and pheromone lures. Our pheromone lures will help to attract the adult male moths. As a result of catching the males, mating and egg laying can be reduced and populations monitored for additional control measures. Place the traps when adults are active, from April to October. Each pack comes with 3 pheromone lures, each lure is active for 4 to 6 weeks. Hang the traps about 1-1.5m above ground, so that there is an air flow around the trap, using a trap density of one per 250m2. Add approximately 5cm of water with a drop of detergent into the trap bucket. Replace the pheromone lures after 6 weeks. Empty the traps weekly to avoid the trap filling with dead insects that can repel other moths. Even after a month or two the capsules will still be effective, so if replacing just hang the old one in a tree…… as a box vigilante when the moths are active I go round at night with an LED head light, armed with a “ fly zapper” (battery changed insect killer) the box moth is very distinctive and easy to hit. For every one caught in the traps I can get dozens more, and both sexes, circling the traps or in and around the box trees. You will still need to check your hedges/topiary manually to pick off surviving caterpillars and pupae before they do extensive damage! It’s a war and NATO cannot help. The plastic container is the pheromone attractant, the plastic is impregnated with the pheromone lure, which release from the plastic for up to 1 month. You just remove the plastic lure from the sachet and place in the trap. If you have opened the other 2 lures and not using them, i recommend that you seal the sachets back up to keep the lures active and place in the fridge or freezer until needed. The pheromone refills are pricey but worth it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This trap works - don't hesitate! *by N***E on 6 July 2025* My lovely box hedge has been decimated by these b****y caterpillars, and so we bought this pheromone trap in the vague(!) hope that it might make a difference. It was delivered to us on June 15th, and we put it together and installed it straight away. So, it's been up for just under 4 weeks. During this time it's despatched literally hundreds of moths. I can't easily say hom impressed I am. We weren't expecting much - it seems to collect about 30 every 2 days. We're not out of hte woods yet, but I really wish that every box hedge was protected with one of these - together we could make a real difference. I'm only sorry I haven't got a photo to share to show how effective this is.
