I could have removed them and used the buds only as they are similar to the old ipod earbuds. However, when you have metal like that in your ear, it does vibrate and cause problems. So you need some type of a cover. I was hoping these would go over and work. They did. First, let me say that they are a soft type of rubber. Very comfortable. They are smaller than the YurBuds cover so you can't expect it to go all the way down into the ear canal. They work well and keep the buds in my ears. I am able to hear well and run with them without feeling like I need to rip the buds out.
