I have combined my own music, Jpegs, and AVI video clips from my Canon Powershot camera. Yah, old school,but when my recent little used DVD died I was told it would be difficult to find one that would read my home videos. Well the Big box store said this one wouldn't do it, but it does and I'm going to buy another tomorrow. I tried it on an 1988 Panasonic and a Sony HD 40 Brava with excellent results. It even played VCR movies I copied in a VCR/DVD combo and played them too. For this example, we will use the standard DVD players that produce 480 lines. The picture on your TV is constructed in lines of pixels. There are 480 lines from the top to bottom of the standard TV picture. It is like taking a photograph and cutting it into 480 thin equal strips and putting it back together one strip at a time. That is how the TV paints the image you see. INTERLACE SCAN: This is what the American TV system has used since TV was invented. In a 480 line picture, the TV electronics paints a single frame by scanning only the odd numbered lines, (1, 3, 5, 7.......) one at a time from top to bottom. When it paints the 240 odd number lines, the scan begins again to paint each of the even number lines (2, 4, 6, 8......) one at a time top to bottom. Then the TV combines or (interlaces) both frames to create one single complete frame of 480 lines. This scanning process happens 30 times every second to produce moving pictures. PROGRESSIVE SCAN: This is the format that all color computer displays have used since the beginning. Each of the 480 lines are scanned (progressively) in order (1, 2, 3, 4, ......) non-stop from top to bottom to paint one single complete picture. This means the single frame of video is scanned only once to make a complete picture. Because there is only one scan of each frame, it does it in half the time. The TV does this process 60 times every second. That means twice as many frames in the same amount of time. Progressive scan produces twice as many frames per second. This fills in the gaps between the 30 frames per second of interlace scanning. This makes smoother movement of the picture. Less jitter and sharper pictures. It also greatly improves the contrast between the darkest black and the brightest white over the entire picture. This makes colors more cleaner, brighter, and accurate. Lines and edges are more defined. It is the difference between the old analog TV and your current computer images. If progressive scanning can make a standard 480 line picture that much better, just imagine what it does for Hi-Def 1080p BluRay pictures.
