As far as a mess, just keep a plate under it. Honestly, I like that it doesn’t drain. Cooking in that fat makes it tastes better and less likely to burn. **Q: Is this easy to clean? Can it be immersed?** A: Dragons3.....I have found it extremely easy to clean. NO, it can NOT be immersed. I personally use select-a-size paper towels to clean my unit each time I use it. Immediately after removing my food I unplug the unit then use one small paper towel to wipe it down. I then I take that same paper towel and rinse it with soapy water and while still damp (not dripping) I lay it in the unit and close the lid and allow it to 'steam clean' for about 20 seconds. I then discard that towel, and use a fresh one dampened and wipe the unit to 'rinse' it. The unit is still 'hot' at this point....I use tongs to hold the wet paper towel. After rinsing, I use one last small paper towel to dry the unit, then set it aside 'open' to cool. I 'never' use spray of any kind on my unit and have had no problems with foods sticking. It's really a great little gadget. I also have the Dash Mini Waffle Maker....absolutely perfect together! Mine get a lot of use....highly recommend both. **Q: Can it cook steak? How can you tell when it's medium rare?** A: Fortunately, you can cook steak on a griddle whatever the model you have available. In fact, cooking steak on a griddle is no more difficult than cooking it in a frying pan or on the barbecue. So, however you like to eat it, delicious and juicy steak can be just a few minutes away if you own a griddle **Q: Does a normal toast fit in?** A: The square edges will stick out, but not a problem. I make grilled cheese sandwiches. I live alone so it’s great for just one person. I have a lot of their little grills and gadgets and waffle makers and this just fit right in with everything else that I have. It’s easy to clean, but don’t forget to season it first. It was a great price considering how much these have gone up in price over the years. I couldn’t be happier. This is my second one in over 20 years. The other one I dropped and I broke it so I think it would still be going if I hadn’t done that. I highly recommend this. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Safe to use *by on Reviewed in the United States 6 September 2026* Greatest little grill!! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Performance varied by application *by on Reviewed in the United States 8 March 2021* OK, I mainly bought this because it was cute. And I have a Dash mini rice cooker that is terrific for use in my travel trailer (I'm cooking for two.) In testing the panini press, I tried three tests:1. Reheat a leftover piece of a muffuletta sandwich: While this fat sandwich is admittedly way too thick for the press, it did a credible job of heating the sandwich through and crisping the bread, the bottom of which had become rather soggy.2. "Taco" with ricotta, mozzarella and marinara. This was obviously not the best use for this machine, or probably any panini press for that matter. The ricotta melted and oozed out with the marinara before the tortilla was adequately toasted. I'd consider this one a fail.3. "Quesadilla" with chicken, poblano, and jack cheese. This one came out a little better since the ingredients didn't start out liquid, but again the cheese melted and oozed out before the tortilla was as toasty as I would have liked it. I'm going to assume that generally, this machine isn't great for toasting stuffed tortillas.SUMMARY: I will try a few more tests before giving up, but I'm not sure how much I'll really use this machine. The capacity is really small, so heating up a small sandwich for 1 is probably the optimal use for me. I wouldn't use it to cook burgers or meat or eggs--I'd always use another method for those applications. And if I need to heat up two sandwiches, I'd probably use the stove top or oven so they are done at the same time. I didn't find the functionality great enough to get a second one in order to heat two sandwiches simultaneously.
