People don't thing of a mixer ad an amplifier but it actually is. Your taking the millivolt mic signal and adding gain(amplification) to it. The best practice here is to get your much input to overload then back off till it no longer distorts. This is the beginning of the audio chain. This sets the ultimate noise level.
