It has a built-in pendulum that moves back & forth when you move & that's how it keeps wound. If you don't wear it, it will die, but all you have to do is wind it. I love automatic watches, no batteries just movement, plus this watch being skeletonized you can see the mechanics of the watch & can actually see the spring inside & see when it's almost about to die, all in a I absolutely love this watch & that's why I bought the rectangular version of this watch as well. **Q: does it have illuminated ?** A: No it isn't illuminated. **Q: Does the second hand tick or is it a smooth motion?** A: This style is a sweep second and will have 4 ticks per second. And have little white tips. So it can be hard to read. Doesn’t glow in the dark. So if it’s dark you will not be able to read the time without a light. Is water proof but don’t take a bath in it or a very long shower. It’s an awesome watch that keeps on going. And it’s an attention getter and a beautiful time piece to wear. It’s automatic so with the movement of the wrist it will keep it ticking for years to come. Fossil makes truly quality products that can stand the test of time. But with the Relic Damon Automatic. You’re going to have to care for it. Take it off when showering. Wind it about 3 rotations to 15 a day. And treat it like it’s a Rolex and it will last you for a very long time. There is no battery. So you will never have to worry about your time piece going dead on you. If you can get past you can’t read it in the dark. And it will take a little learning curve to learn how to read it. It’s a beautiful design and a wonderful time peace with a beautiful mechanical display front and back.
