It does exactly what it is supposed to do. It gives accurate and consistent measurements of specific gravity. The glass for the hydrometer is extremely thin and appears fragile, but I’m sure that is how it has to be made for it to work. Regardless, it comes with a really protective plastic case lined with styrofoam so I don’t think it would break. The hydrometer is also a little difficult to read because the lines are so small and close together, but again this seems standard and all of the other products I saw on desertcart so I think that’s just how they are made. Know that you pretty much will need to purchase a turkey baster to get test samples from your mead to the cylinder. I’ve really enjoyed this product and other than just waiting an excessively long time, it’s the only way to know when your mead is done fermenting. The object is to know the fermentable content before and after fermentation. Since there is no chemicals involved, I see no way you could get the ph or acidity using the weight method used here. Works fine for beer, and that is all I know for sure. **Q: Is it normal to have a small line between narrow and wide part of the glass? Looks almost like a crack.** A: Yes it can appear that way due to the joint there. If it has moisture on the inside is when I would say that its defective.
