The Home Bartender, Second Edition: 175+ Cocktails Made with 4 Ingredients or Less (The Art of Entertaining) Review: Essential Cocktail Guide for Everyone - This book is fantastic for both beginners and seasoned home bartenders. With over 175 simple recipes using four ingredients or less, it makes mixing drinks easy, fun, and stress-free. The instructions are clear, the cocktails are delicious, and the presentation is beautiful. A must-have for anyone who enjoys entertaining at home. Review: Fantastic resource for home bar - Love this book. Has all the big hitters (old fashion, long island, sunrise, etc.), variations, even non-alcoholic versions. Super easy to follow. There's even an index that groups similar drinks together, designed to help you identify what drinks you might enjoy. ALL drinks are 4 ingredients or less. I've seen some complaints that this isn't so. Now, some drinks are 4 ingredients *and a garnish*, but a garnish isn't an ingredient, it's for presentation. Any ingredient integral to the drink is listed, while garnishes are specifically notated as such. I'm really happy with this book and find it extremely helpful. It even offers lists of specific liquors for a range of budgets and quality. It's the perfect companion for a home bar.

The only book I’ll need for my bar
We never made cocktails until we moved to CO and bought a house with a beautiful “restaurant looking like” bar. Now, we gather at the bar for cocktails anytime we have company. I can’t believe I have waited 10 years to buy anything other than the cocktail book I got a Salvation Army but I won’t need another one. The recipes are 4 ingredients or less. Beautiful pictures and the recipes are very neatly listed and the same on each page - so it’s very easy to look at and make the drinks quickly. I’m looking forward to offering great cocktails the next time we have guests. Really worth buying. No more internet searches.

I wish I'd bought this before setting up the bar again
We recently decided to re-set up our home bar. My husband has long been a beer drinker, but enjoys whiskey, gin occasionally. I've been a teetotaler since shortly after we married mainly because of kids. I've always preferred cocktails since I taste alcohol strongly. But cocktails get expenses outside or inside the home. Recently though we decided we wanted a legit bar in the house (2 of our 3 kids are legal age drinkers now themselves). I remembered some of the cocktails I used to enjoy, and therefore what liquors to buy. I still had my old cocktail guide books. However, I found the books overwhelming - for that matter, the liquor stores. Vodka used to have a shelf or two, not a row! I decided to buy a couple books with far fewer recipes (though if you want a lot, I highly recommend The Bartender's Bible by Gary Regan). This book was one of 2 I bought. I haven't made anything from the recipes yet, though the recipes I'm familiar with look as they should. I do wish I'd bought this before we started stocking the bar as it gives a nice list at the front of what you need, what is nice to have, and etc for liquor, bar tools, glassware, and mixers. I do love that the book is pretty. I'm visual so far more likely to chose a drink by the photo. It looks as though there will he plenty of drinks to occupy us for a while, and that's good. It's also small enough, I'm not overwhelmed. I only have 2 complaints. One, as someone else said, the varieties on the drinks are a bit of a joke. For instance, there is the classic gin and tonic, then the budget gin and tonic, then the perfect gin and tonic. The only difference really is the brand of gin, and yes the book specifies a brand in each recipe. It'd be less annoying if there wasn't a handy list at the front of the book showing you the recommended classic, budget and perfect brand of each of the main liquors. Often the only other variety offered is the Virgin version. Yet there is also a non-alcoholic section at the back (I didn't notice of it has the same recipes as the rest of the book has scattered throughout). My other complaint is the cover says 4 ingredients or less and yet it's rarely true of a recipe. I guess if you only count the alcohol components as ingredients it's 4 or less, but personally I count juices, sodas, garnishes, etc as ingredients. That said, none of the recipes are long lists of ingredients. Plus the ingredients are relatively common. I would recommend the book, especially if you are starting out.

What a handy book - most recipes are four ingredients or less.
I have a couple of cocktail recipe books, but most require you to find obscure ingredients. I don't really want to go on some quest to find smoked yak entrails just to make a drink. This book has lots of good recipes, most with stuff you already have or can easily get in the grocery store. The instructions are easy to follow, and the book is laid out very well. Overall, a great book, and highly I recommend it for use in your home bar or as a gift.

I was expecting more exotic type drinks... but lots of sweet tropical types. A cute thing to have but not a must.
