The Art of Cursive Penmanship: A Personal Handwriting Program for Adults Review: Handwriting, penmanship as art, craft and beauty. - I am stunned. I'm not sure what to say about this 'book', simply because it is so much more than a 'book'. It is a binder of writings that represent the life's work of generations of people that love the hand-written word. The exercises demonstrate techniques of turning scribbles into art. Reviews that dismiss the examples of poetry and love letters are missing the point ... this hand writing book is promoting handwriting as art. Curves, ovals, and straight lines of beauty and self-expression, including emotions. Love it! I have ordered and returned other penmanship books, including some that thought sarcasm would be a good teaching technique. Not. Give me this binder, please. Review: Great Practice! - I really like this book! It has a nice sturdy cover and really thick pages. I'm assuming the thick pages are so that you can use a fountain pen and it won't bleed through. I haven't tried that yet but they are very thick. I saw a review that says it doesn't start teaching you anything until after the first hundred pages but starting on page 11 it gives you practice to write each letter. You get to practice all the lowercase letters and at the bottom of each of those pages it gives you words that you can make with the letters you've learned to build on your skills as you learn more. It goes from there onto uppercase and some drills to really get your handwriting consistent. I thought that was very helpful. The letters start out big and get smaller later in the book so you can focus on form and then improve your precision with smaller letters later on. There are plenty of practices and I think they're helpful so I'm very happy with this purchase

Great tool for anyone
I got into penmanship and was recommended this book. So far my handwriting is improving. It's helped with print too.

Useful, but most pages are copybook sheets.
I've met Michael Sull many times at pen shows, including having a table next to his one year in San Francisco. It's amazing to watch his calm hand and zen-like demeanor create beautiful calligraphic-art while surrounded by the chaos and noise of the show. I (and probably you) are not him..... This books is not about calligraphic-art, it's about practical handwriting. Why learn connected cursive handwriting? I think every way you communicate - handwriting, printing, typing, talking, etc... results in a different way of thinking. Not better, not worse, just different. Consider each communication path another tool in your "mental quiver" - the more choices you have, the better your thinking. Quoted from his Authors Note: " Much of this book's content has appeared in my previous work American Cursive Handwriting which I wrote for primary-grade students......this book is focused on the adult....if you follow the suggestions outlined in this book and dutifully practice every day, you surely will not fail." And so, the bulk of the book - maybe 2/3 of the total space - is about practice, with practice sheets for you to fill in. There is a lot of interesting content, but this is sort of a one-time book. After you do all of the exercises it's "used-up". If that's what you are expecting, than it's the book for you - you will get nowhere just reading about handwriting, it's a manual and muscle skill. Mine just arrived today. I saw a number earlier comments about the construction of the book. It's spiral bound, and people complained that the pages were punched in such a way that they were stuck together and tore if you separated them. My copy had none of these problems - no pages were stuck together at all. From that perspective the book was perfect. Why four stars? I guess I think it should have been pointed out more clearly that you were mostly buying blank fill-in worksheets. The word "workbook" is never mentioned, at least at Amazon. Of course, if you want to learn you need to practice. But a small number of different worksheets are replicated many times in the bound book. A set of these could either copied by the user, or downloaded and printed, and re-printed. The book would have been 1/3 the size, and could be re-used by reprinting the sheets. Just because you want to learn handwriting doesn't mean you have to give up modern technology. After I do my dutiful practice for a while, I will see if I can overcome the damage caused by getting a "C" in my 3rd grade handwriting class. Maybe I will come back and raise my rating then. My criticism is minor - if you want to learn handwriting, buy the book, and practice..practice.. practice. .

Well Done
The layout and binding of this book is so well done. The cover is well made with the spiral spine placed in the interior of the thick laminated outer cover. The pages are easy to turn and the paper is thick and high quality. Although there are practice spaces in the book, I purchased a separate practice book with the proper lines and markings for penmanship.

An excellent system
I will note--Yes, this is mostly drills and exercises, because that's how you learn handwriting, but that doesn't lessen the value of the book. The value is in the SYSTEM of teaching handwriting--the specific drills and the order in which you do them. Anybody can get a workbook of the cursive letters and practice writing them for much cheaper, but the way the author teaches the subject, you start with basic drills to improve your fine-motor handwriting skills, and then build on them, from easier letters to harder ones and larger to smaller handwriting. I've been using it for a week and have done six of the eighty-six (!) lessons, and my handwriting is already much better. I learned correctly back in school, but it was a long time ago, and I wanted to write more easily and legibly. It's a treat to see how much better I'm writing after just a half hour a day. Can't wait to see where I am in three months.

A wonderful and thorough book
Love how thorough this book is! It’s bigger than I expected and includes each letter of the alphabet in majuscules as well as minuscules, plus words and phrases to practice. I also love that there are suggested poems and quotes at the end to practice. Michael Sull included everything to master beautiful cursive!

There is no way this book can be faulted. It is a time honoured book. I consider myself to be lucky Together a copy.

Michael R.
